Challenging Conditions Prevail at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup
Challenging sailing conditions have greeted the 40 plus large (read 'expensive') yachts participating in the 2010 Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo, Sardinia. The amazing display of sailing power is broken down into various fleets: Mini Maxis, with Niklas Zennstrom (Skype) RAN sitting in second place ahead of Nevillie Chrichton's Shockwave; Wally, where Y3K is leading; Super Maxi and J Boats, with Ranger and Velshada in first and second place respectively. The event is a combination of course racing and offshore events and continues for the remainder of the week.
Congratulations to Canadian Jan Provan and her team on their win at the Canadian Women's Invitational Match Racing Championship; the event was held at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club in Toronto this past week-end. Jan beat Brazilian Renata Decnop for the top spot; Canadian Sarah Bury and Anne Marie Shewfelt finished third and fourth respectively.
In Britain, the Laser World Championship title finale race saw the strongest winds of the seven day regatta, gusting up to 23 knots in Hayling Bay. Australia's Tom Slingsby won his third Champion title in four years ahead of Britain's Nick Thompson who took silver. Michael Leigh from Royal Vancouver YC posted the best Canadian results in the Gold division; a respectable 28th in a fleet of 53, while David Wright clinched first position in Silver.
In Mahone Bay, NS, Derek Hatfield is getting Spirit of Canada ready for her delivery to la Rochelle, France where she will join other ECO 60 in preparation for the Velux 5 Oceans; the start is only 39 days away and there is still much to achieve before the start gun goes off. American Brad van Liew bid farewell to his family earlier this week when he left Charleston on his way across the Atlantic.
Spirit of Canada Weathers Earl on the Hard While Preparations Contunue Spirit of Canada Media, Hurricane Earl rolled over Nova Scotia this past weekend bringing winds up to 70 knots. The storm came ashore not far from where Spirit of Canada is undergoing final preparations for the Velux 5 Oceans race. The boat is currently on the hard at East River Marine with the keel hanging in a ten foot well that was dug so the bottom of the boat could be brought down to ground level.... Chicago Match Race Center to host Canada's Cup Dobbs Davis, After a hiatus of three years, an agreement has been reached enabling the Chicago Match Race Center (CMRC) to host a 2010 edition of the Canada's Cup.
