Welcome to's New Zealand newsletter for 25 August 2010

There is plenty of sailing action from around the world in this issue.

The Volvo 70 Groupama has taken the lead in the SevenStars Round Britain and Ireland Race, after a very fast trip up the east coast of UK.

While the sailing world was focused on that event, on Tuesday morning, GMT, a solo sailor set a record for the singlehanded circumnavigation of Britain and Ireland. In fact he made such good time, that he was able to take the time for the fastest circumnavigation by a crewed yacht as well - covering the 1800nm plus course in just over four days and 15 hours. We have the details of this remarkable effort in this edition.

While the Round Britain racers face strong winds and cold temperatures, further south in Spain, the TP52 fleet enjoys warmer climes as they compete in the Cartagena regatta of the Audi MedCup. Those who have followed this circuit will know the standard has risen as the various America's Cup teams gear up. We will cover the event on each day, along with all the other racing news.

This time, the MedCup focus will be on TeamOrigin, who have acquired several members of the Kiwi 'Tight Five' from the Team New Zealand's 1995 and 2000 campaigns. And, combined with the five Olympic Gold medals won by their afterguard, the performance of the Brits will be watched closely. This team fired in the recent 1851 Cup sailed off Cowes. Now for their next test.

Staying with the warmer weather, Hamilton Island Race Week is well advanced, with several New Zealand yachts competing. The Sail-World team in Australia have been covering the regatta and we feature their reports in this edition along with commentary from Georgia Racing.

We also have the story and images of the new Bakewell-White Mini 650 of Queenslander Scott Cavanough and his ‘Skippy Challenge' which was denied entry in the Brisbane to Great Keppel Race. She is entered in the next Mini Transat.

In San Francisco, three New Zealand 18fter crews are competing in an international regatta, which is enjoying some of the fresh and steady breezes the 2014 America's Cup competitors have been promised. Rich Roberts reports in this issue along with images from Erik Simonson and Chris Ray.

On the East Coast of USA, the International C-Class Catamaran Challenge Trophy fleet of six 25ft wingsailed catamarans has been held ashore for the past two days with gale force winds. We have reports in this issue. The main focus is whether the Canadians can retain the trophy, or can Steve Clark regain the trophy for USA, or will BMW Oracle's Jimmy Spithill and Glenn Ashby (both AUS) be able to surprise both of them? More on as this regatta unfolds.

And in Singapore the sailing has concluded in the Youth Olympic Games, we have the final report and images from the racing, in this edition.

This evening we met briefly with BMW Oracle's Russell Coutts to sign the large 1200mm x 850mm image from the start of Race 1 of the 33rd America's Cup. That image will also be signed by Principal Race Officer for the regatta, Harold Bennett and is being auctioned on Trademe - due to conclude at 11.00pm on Thursday 26th. Proceeds of the auction will be donated to charity as part of the Many Miles for Mary run from Auckland to Wellington, four person - six day run, which concluded in Wellington on Saturday afternoon.

At Sail-World, we have changed our submission system so that you can load images and stories in the one frame. The change is a big improvement and we have been using it ourselves for story and image compilation - very simple. One of the features of the system is that you get an automated acknowledgment when the story is put online together with a link and advice as to which world regions the story has been posted.

Good sailing!

Warren Douglas,
Practice day for the Cartagena regatta of the Audi MedCup circuit has concluded and for the Emirates Team New Zealand TP52 crew it was back to reality, just as it was for the rest of the fleet.
