Last week, much conversation centered on the America's Cup Media Trials, which took place over an intensive four-day period off of Valencia, Spain. For two days, a treasure-trove of HD video cameras and assorted bits of kit were attached to Extreme 40 catamarans; the other two days were devoted to capturing high-definition imagery of RC44s. In both cases the boats were match racing, and in both cases the boats were sailed in a variety of conditions, from some light stuff to some big-grin conditions. The goal? To determine which type of boat—a cat or a monohull—will work better as a media platform during the 34th Cup.
Following the wrap-up of this evaluation, a new website has been launched that contains a wealth of video clips, as well as an eye-popping sizzle reel. 'We launched this site because we generated so much material that we needed to consolidate edited highlights in one place,' said BMW ORACLE Racing CEO Russell Coutts. 'We welcome sailors and non-sailors alike to offer comments and feedback.'

In Valencia, the RC44 fleet is transitioning from match-racing mode to fleet-racing mode. Team Aqua polished off the match-racing portion of the regatta; Artemis sits in second place and BMW/Oracle rounds out the top three. Most boats used today's 'rest day' to switch gears, which, according to the rules, mean amateur drivers. Racing resumes today and continues through the weekend.
Closer to home, check out the racing action at the Melges 32 Nationals, taking place this weekend at the Little Traverse Yacht Club in Harbor Springs, Michigan.
And because it's always a good thing to check out sailing photos on a Friday before a big weekend on the water, lensman Leighton O'Connor has provided a nice gallery of images from this year's Marblehead NOOD's.
Fair winds and following seas,
