A major announcement for New Zealand sailing with the unveiling of plans for a National Ocean Water Sports Centre to be constructed, or rather dug, at Takapuna Beach, adjacent to the takapuna Boating Club.

Takapuna has been the venue of about 14 World Championships and with this facility will move into a league of its own in world sailing. It ticks all the boxes - great sailing water; one of the best urban beaches in the world; accommodation within walking distance of the regatta venue; and now two fabulous sailing facilities side by side, along with an enormous grassed boat park.

Graphic of the futuristic deck view of the NOWSC 14 June 2010

The NOWSC really presents New Zealand sailing the opportunity to go up to the next level in terms of the application of sailing and coaching technology. The days of a quick debrief in the carpark are now gone. With the development of the right technology, sailors will be able to replay the training sessions ashore and learn while the on the water memories are fresh.

In short, this is a real leg up for New Zealand to reproduce some of the great performances of the past on the Olympic stage and for the classes, other than the windsurfers to pull the sport out of its medal drought, in which it has languished since Barcelona.

Planning is expected to be complete by mid-September and construction should be complete in the middle of 2011.

Battle Stations at the Ottawa Skiff and Cat Grand Prix
Stephanie Mah,
For the last seven years, the Nepean Sailing Club has hosted the Ottawa Skiff and Cat Grand Prix on the tea coloured water of Lac Deschenes. The sailing area itself is already a bit weird and wonderful (with rapids and shoals down one end). The wind is equally varied: either light, puffy and shifty, or doomsday nuclear.
