Welcome to's USA newsletter for 20 May 2010.

BMW Oracle Racing will be back in action soon on the America's Cup scene, when the Louis Vuitton Trophy series gets underway again off La Maddelena, Sardinia. It will be the first real test for the US team - even more so, given that they are back in monohulls, and a triple whammy given that many of the other teams come to this regatta hot from the Audi MedCup in Sardinia, last week.

We have a report and images from the training sessions in this edition.

In the last two days there have been several significant events in the sailing world - a couple of these off the water.

First was the meeting, as reported briefly in the last newsletter, in Valencia of 19 designers to formulate a new design rule for the 34th America's Cup.

Little new is really being said after the meeting, which broke up 15 minutes ahead of time - beating the Spanish media keen to catch up on the discussions.

In this edition we carry several reports and a commentary piece.

Soon after the break up of the designers meeting came a bombshell out of La Maddelena, Italy, with the announcement from TeamOrigin that team director, Mike Sanderson (NZL), was exiting forthwith.

It is always difficult trying to read behind the carefully crafted media statements that are associated with such events.

While unexpected by many, insiders had been expecting a blow-up for some time. Certainly the team has had some rather unspectacular results. Whether it is fair to blame Sanderson for those, is a moot point. Certainly a team that is laden with Olympic Gold has not really made the transition into the Louis Vuitton Trophy or the TP52 worlds, and have made crucial errors at crucial times of events, for which they have been punished dearly.

Brits float across Lake Garda in a bouncy castle
On the lighter side of the sailing scene, we are pleased to present the crossing of Lake Garda in bouncy castle, by a British group, taking in an international sailing regatta along the way. There's a video as well - which will put a smile on your face.

Don't miss your opportunity to win one of ten copies of PredictWind, the world's leading wind and weather forecasting system developed for sailors - whether racing or cruising. Also have a look at the latest release on which features some great new features, to significantly improve the use and information that can be obtained from what was already an outstanding application.
