Welcome to's USA newsletter for 14 May 2010.

On Wednesday, the International Sailing Federation released the full copy of its Olympic Commission's report into the state of Olympic Sailing and the sport generally.

It is a very complex document, and a credit to its authors.

Full marks too, to ISAF for having the courage to release the full document. Honesty is the first step on the way to redemption, and while the ISAF will come in for some flak along the way, at least the issues, mistakes and solutions are out there for all to see.

The document is complex, but free of weasel words and the usual bureaucratic pretense that all is well in spite of the most damning statistics.

Olympic Garda Eurolymp 2010  Elena Giolai

There are a lot of things that can be done. Clever programs aren't part of the solution - hard work is - along with a realistion that for the situation to improve, everyone has to look at what is in the best interests of the sport rather than their particular facet of the game.

The ISAF has set themselves clearly on this path, there is no going back.

In this edition we feature the ISAF cover story on the Olympic Commission's Report, and interview with the Chair of the Olympic Commission, Phil Jones and a commentary and analysis of some of the key points in the report. The interview with Phil Jones and the analysis are first of a several part story on this vital topic.

The ISAF is welcoming your input and contact details are available in their story.

Weta flies in the breeze. Image by

Part of the ISAF plan is to bring more people into sailing, and more countries into the ISAF. In this edition we feature a boat test on a boat that was initially designed to get kids into sailing but has since taken on a life of its own. Sailed as a single hander in San Francisco, a recreational and long distance boat elsewhere in USA and Europe and as a racer and entry level boat DownUnder, the Weta was not surprisingly chosen as Sailing World's Dinghy of the Year in 2010. Click here to read our views on this remarkable boat in this edition.

The Audi MedCup has kicked off in Cascais, Portugal and the competition has been white hot. In yesterday's race sailed in a big breeze there was plenty of action with Terry Hutchinson (USA) being taken off before the start of the racing.

The America's Cup scene is never quiet, with the news yesterday from the America's Cup Hall of Fame of the induction of four of the Tight Five New Zealanders who formed the Alinghi campaign in 2003 and 2007 plus 2010. Plus the head of the design team for BMW Oracle Racing, Mike Drummond, for his many America's Cup winning design contributions. Our congratulations to all.
