34th America's Cup 1st Press Conference - Russell Coutts (BOR) - Vincenzo Onorato (MCL)  BMW Oracle Racing: Guilain Grenier
Welcome to's USA newsletter for 7 May 2010.

The first media conference for the 34th America's Cup was staged in the Sala Exedra in Rome's Musei Capitolini, surrounded by some of Italy's most precious treasures. Russell Coutts representing the defending Golden Gate Yacht Club and Vincenzo Onorato on behalf of the Challenger of Record, mapped out the future of the 34th America's Cup.

It's a future of consultation and collaboration.

The timeline has been set. The first designer meeting is in Valencia in two weeks, the whole deal is due to be wrapped up by Christmas and the entries close a month later.

But it's really up to the Challengers to make the first moves.

We have full coverage in this edition, including the details of the event as it unfolded live last night, US time.

We're also running full image galleries and analysis on the the announcement, and direction being taken by the Defender and Challenger.

Two US design groups have been engaged to get the conceptual process underway ahead of the boat being selected. Morelli and Melvin talk about their involvement in this edition.

There have been some significant developments in the Volvo Ocean Race. At the same time as the Rome announcement, Groupama were outlining their plans for the race and explaining why they have committed to the next two editions of the race. Then a few hours ago, CAMPER made the announcement that they had secured the services of three times Volvo Ocean race winner, Stu Bannatyne as watch captain. Bannatyne was believed to be hooked up with the Alinghi program.

The upcoming Volvo Ocean Race is shaping up to be a cracker, certainly USA's PUMA Racing is the benchmark from the previous edition, and would seem to have got off onto an early start, however the competition is formidable.

Jessica Watson: Keeping the Record Straight
Nancy Knudsen.,
As a publication for sailors, not the general public, it behoves us to be accurate about 'round the world' records. When Jessica sails into Sydney Harbour in May, she may have survived her voyage with bravery and skill, and be on her way to fame and fortune, but she will not have taken Jesse Martin's round-world record from him.... Lies, Damn Lies, and PR Spin
Bob Fisher,
I stand in awe at the achievement of Jessica Watson. That one so young has had the fortitude to withstand the elements of the oceans alone and unaided for the 200 plus-day duration of a voyage through some of the most hostile waters on the planet, should be more than enough to warrant our appreciation of her seamanship and raw guts. This is no easy voyage. It is one whose demands would leave th... [more]

America's Cup details kept to a minimum
Stuart Alexander,
The seven hills of Rome were due to roar today but instead could muster little more than the squeak of a mouse when the first major announcement about the next America's Cup was proclaimed in the majestic forum of the Musei Capitolini on the imperious Piazza del Campidoglio.
