Sail-World New Zealand: 22 October 2009

Neville England was presented with a Yachting New Zealand Honour Award by YNZ Chief Executive Des Brennan in Christchurch on Friday 9th October.
Welcome Sail-World.Com's New Zealand newsletter for 22 October 2009

Our apologies for the delay in this newsletter, caused by a variety of circumstances largely beyond our control.

Further to our opening story on Monday, we're pleased to be able to report that the two young sailors, silver medalists at this year's World 420 Open Championships, who are chasing the Toyota Believe sponsorship have closed the gap, and in fact jumped into the lead position by over 100 votes, but have now been caught. There is just over a week left to run in the contest. Please give them your support. You don't have to give money, just click your mouse a couple of times, and help them to win a substantial cash grant from Toyota. Please click here-now to vote

Cris Brodie, has joined NZ Rigging as a Director
There has been some further developments on the America's Cup front with more filing of papers ahead of the New York Supreme Court hearing on 27 October. The parties have the opportunity to reply and rebut via affidavits. these are now getting heavily into security and international politics in the area. At the outset we published an analysis by Dr Paul Buchanan formerly of Auckland University - which we believe was balanced and nothing we have seen since really changes that view. So while Sail-World will run the links to the documents provided by the Challenger and Defender, we're not commenting further, at this stage.

In this edition we have a release on the Louis Vuitton Trophy, which is the first official or unofficial comment on the regatta, due to start in two weeks, that we have seen. We are aware aware that the Virtual Eye graphics package will be used for the regatta and understand that New Zealand's Peter Lester will be participating in the commentary, and that there are plans for live streaming - however that is all we know, at this stage.

Sadly we have to report the passing of Neville England, a well known Christchurch sailor, coach and identity at the age of just 57 years. I only knew Neville, when we both worked on the YNZ Junior Committee a couple of years ago. He just oozed passion for sailing and sailors and the story in this edition is testimony from the young sailors he has helped over many years. Fortuitously Yachting New Zealand recognised Neville's contribution to the sport with the presentation of an Honour Award at a surprise function at his club, last Saturday week. Neville was one of those people whose contribution to the sport is such that most would have believed that he would have been recognised in this way, many years ago. Our condolences from Sail-World to Neville's friends and family.

Helsman's view - Alfa Romeo - Media Day 19 October 2009  Richard Gladwell

Tomorrow the HSBC Coastal Classic gets underway off Devonport Wharf. Sail-World will be on the water providing coverage. ONE Sport's Martin Tasker will be aboard Neville Crichton's supermaxi Alfa Romeo and will be attempting to beam back live on-board coverage around mid-day and late afternoon and maybe for the evening news.

On Monday, Neville Crichton very generously took a large media contingent sailing on Alfa Romeo. We had been aboard Alfa Romeo soon after she was launched and en route to USA/Europe. Often when you step aboard racing yachts after a couple of years, they look a little tired, particularly after they have been raced as heavily as Alfa Romeo. Not so with this silver bullet.

The supermaxi Alfa Romeo dwarfs an America's Cupper - Media Day 19 October 2009  Richard Gladwell

She is in great shape - looking well run in, but extremely refined and efficient and will be very hard to beat in the Coastal Classic and upcoming the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race - where five top of the line supermaxi yachts will be competing. We have a gallery of images taken off the water, below and on deck of Alfa Romeo, and have sufficient material for another couple of stories which will be run over the next few days. Crichton has been out sailing, testing and training every day this week in Alfa Romeo, and runs a very professional campaign. we'll be watching Alfa Romeo's performance very carefully over the coming months.

Rosebud (USA) takes pounding in the Rolex Middle Sea race - she later dropped her mast and was one of many retirements  © Rolex/ Kurt Arrigo

The Rolex Middle Sea Race has also concluded with ICAP Leopard just missing the record by about 30 minutes. As predicted the conditions were very difficult for the first day or so of the classic. In this edition we feature a story from our European correspondent, someone we know rather well, who competed in a 42fter. The torrid conditions contributed to the retirement of around 25% of the fleet.

Silver Sails Racing are competing in the Osprey Rolex Cup in St Petersburg, Florida, USA (Samantha Osborne, Jenna Hansen, Genoa Griffin Fedyszyn and Raynor Smeal)

Many thanks for your help and input, we're here to help sailing, and help those who wish to help themselves.

Good sailing!
