Editorial August 12, '09.

Good morning, or good afternoon or good evening, that should cover me depending on where in the world you are as we take you on another journey through the powerboating world.

Today I've taken a walk back through the pages of history this week, initially when the thought hit me that this very month, August, marks 100-years since a Norwegian-born American named Ole Evinrude made his mark with ‘Detachable Row Boat Engines.'

Incidentally, I did not use this in my story, but here's a little extra for you; two fellows from the same home town as Ole, one William S Harley and Arthur Davidson were working on an engine themselves.

They were having some trouble coming up with a suitable design for a magneto, the story goes, and it was Ole who came to the fore and helped them out.

Mr Harley and Mr Davidson, just like Ole, made quite a name for themselves and became better known as Harley-Davidson.

If you're a fan of Class 1 Offshore, the pinnacle of the sport, you will doubtless be dismayed to hear it is in disarray with the powerful two-boat Qatar team having withdrawn, another Norwegian team expected to withdraw and Australia's Maritimo team has indicated it will pull out after this month's Romanian GP.

Nasty accusations of bad sportsmanship and ineffective judges flying every which way.

We also deliver to you the results from the latest P1 Offshore and the Formula 1 tunnel boats and if you're fed up with high gasoline prices then our report on solar powered boats might be the answer.

I've also taken a look back at perhaps boating's most iconic brand name, Chris-Craft, a story that got me thinking when I was in Sydney last week for what was the highly-successful Sydney International Boat Show.

Anyway, this week's entire edition may not suit everyone, but there's plenty here to read and I'm sure you'll enjoy at least some of my ramblings.

Make your visit a regular occurrence, I guarantee you'll always find something to make keep you awake or give you something to talk about to friends (and enemies?) when next down at the marina or the boat ramp.
