Welcome Sail-World.Com's US newsletter for 28 July 2009

Our feature story today is a review of Alinghi 5, from a Sail-World correspondent based in le Bouveret, Switzerland who attended the media day, and has also been on the water several times following the massive catamaran.

Regardless of what you think about the America's Cup, and like most others, while we view the upcoming contest as something very unique and intriguing, the cost to the rest of the once America's Cup teams is just horrendous, and many teams are beyond the point of no return.

However be that as it may, the technology being used in the Alinghi 5 catamaran and BMW Oracle Racing's trimaran is a big step up in sailing technology, and this review is the first real look under the bonnet of either yacht that we have seen.

Our correspondent JPJ wishes to remain anonymous, however he is an experienced Swiss multihull sailor, with a racing trimaran, so he is very familar with the type and issues. Plus he is a very good photographer, and the detail shots won't be seen on any of the official websites.

Certainly JPJ has identified some issues with Alinghi 5, which may/may not have been expected at this stage. The design and sailing teams are now starting to run short of the currency of the America's Cup - Time. And, that is probably going to limit development of the boat - particularly once she moves away from Switzerland and the constructed in country rules come more into play.

Over the past few weeks we have featured some outstanding images galleries form some of the sailing world's top photographers, and we are pleased to present yet another from Carlo Borlenghi, who is on commission to Alinghi to cover their launch - don't miss more of his beautiful work.

We are pleased to advise that sometime today, if it hasn't already happened, Sail-World will set new record for numbers of Unique Viewers across all sites, and has already smashed the previous records for numbers of visitors, pages viewed, hits and content download. We look forward to reporting our new traffic numbers at the end of July.

Good sailing!
