Sail-World USA: 16 July 2009

Alinghi 5 after crossbeam shots and detail including starboard rudder  David Lenoir
Welcome Sail-World.Com's USA newsletter for 16 July 2009

No racing in the 2009 Volvo ISAF Youth Worlds in Brazil - due to a lack of wind. More racing is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, however with seven races to be completed in two days, maybe less it is a big ask and inevitably the series will be shortened.

We have reports of the second day of racing in the event, and images from all days' racing. Organisers should be ruing the decision not to race on the rest day - which of course, was blessed with beautiful sailing conditions.

The Billionaires' Handbags have come out again in the America's Cup, with another day in the New York Supreme Court being scheduled for next Tuesday (local time), to hear arguments on the vexed issues of engines, movable ballast and whether or not BMW Oracle racing should be compelled to provide their Customs House Registry certificate for a Challenger which may have been launched, or may still be under construction.

The manual power and propulsion issues are very technical, however once the Match eventually gets underway, could prove to be very crucial on the outcome.

In this issue we have some comment from both sides, plus links to the relevant documents. On the sailing side of the America's Cup we have more in the very popular SpyCam series, with shots of Alinghi 5 being worked over, and BOR90's new super tall mast.

On the water, Gilles Martin-Raget takes us for a ride aboard BMW Oracle Racing's BOR90 and we have two galleries of shots from the 90ft trimaran literally in full flight off San Diego.

Over at Lake Garda, Italy, the top US crew of Erik Storck and Trevor Moore, sit just one place outside the cut for the Gold Fleet in the 49er Worlds. In Denmark, USA's Paige Railey is well and truly on the comeback trail, holding a lead of five points in the Womens 2009 European Championships for the Laser Radial class.

Although none of the 2008 Olympic medalists are present, there's plenty of strong competition - including Sarah Steyaert (FRA) the defending world champion, who is lying in fifth place overall. At the 2008 Olympics, brother Zach told us that he and Paige had an agenda to be at the 2012 Olympics together, and on the basis of their performances to date, that objective would seem to be coming together nicely.

Stay tuned to for reports on both the 49er Worlds, the Laser Radial Europeans and Volvo ISAF Youth Worlds.

Good sailing!
