Sail-World USA - 13 May 2009

Racing on the Practice Race of the 2009 Audi MedCup  © Juerg Kaufmann
Welcome to Sail-World.Com's USA newsletter for 13 May 2009.

Lots of action at present, with the Practice Race from the first round of the Audi MedCup series in this edition we feature reports and images from the racing and the opening performance of Emirates Team New Zealand. BMW Oracle Racing's skipper, Russell Coutts helming the Swedish flagged Artemis did not have such a good day. Both yachts are built by Cookson Boats, rigged by Southern Spars and with sails from North Sails NZ.

The America's Cup moved into the cloak and dagger phase overnight with the inclusion of details of the police interview with a member of BMW Oracle Racing's team taking various observations around the facility in Villeneuve where the Alinghi multihull defender is said to be under construction.

Surveillance activities after the launch and test sailing of BOR90

Apparently while no law was broken, the case is still under consideration by the Swiss police - who are said to take a very dim view of such goings on.

It was a little surprising to see the matter raised by Lucien Masmejan in the Contempt of Court affidavit lodged by Societe Nautique de Geneve with the New York Supreme Court. Already labelled 'Cheesegate' by the online sailing community, the incident is not the first in the 33rd America's Cup and has been practiced by both sides. Except BMW Oracle Racing had a drink and a meal with their 'observers' from the other team, over to check out the the BOR90 off the West Coast of USA.

For those who could not listen to the audio of the conversation with Peter Montgomery and Russell Coutts we ran on Monday's edition, today we have an edited transcript to read.
