SCIBS countdown, Abu Dhabi aims high, North Sails sets the pace
Welcome relief from the heat today, with rain and cooler temperatures on the east coast. We are all shocked and appalled at the toll the bush fires – an Australian reality – have taken. I'm sure the authorities are going to reassess the emergency and evacuation procedures for those regions, but in the meantime, the Red Cross is offering practical assistance in the form of blood, shelter, clothing, money.
We are all counting the pennies, but this kind of catastrophe makes us rethink our priorities and surely they are, in order, family, friends, pets and then property. Anything you can donate would be one step close to repairing those lives. Visit www.redcross.org.au to make a secure online donation.
Yesterday, I attended the media launch of the 21st Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. It couldn't have been further from the devastation and parched earth of Victoria as we took in the sights from the boat, heading from the venue to the Broadwater. Lush mangroves, clean waterways (although locals were quick to point out the silting to government reps onboard!), happy people frolicking on recreational craft and enjoying the sunshine. Where else but (south-east) Queensland?
Barry Jenkins welcomed us with news of the event's international appeal, with 30 world and Australian launches and plenty of delegations from around the globe, eager to sample this highlight of the Queensland and national marine calendar. It's 100 days to go, but there's plenty of buzz around in both consumer and industry circles.
This week, we have plenty of news, a lot of it good, from New Zealand, the Middle East, the Gold Coast and down south in Wollongong.
Despite the downturn affecting many businesses in NZ, North Sails is working flat out to supply sails and spinnakers for racing boats, superyachts and Emirates Team New Zealand's new TP52, and the new Artemis, both to be launched by Cookson Boats in February. More at www.northsails.co.nz
Seawind Catamarans is savouring the results of sustained marketing support for its range, reaping the rewards in strong international sales and great response in the form of leads from its appearance at MIBLS last week. An addition to its Wollongong factory, whirlwind of boat shows and innovative seminar program promoting the attractions of sailing Downunder are all the positives this dynamic company is counting this year – and it's only February!
Wherever you are, have a great week.
