What a glorious week the Gold Coast turned on for the 50, 678 visitors to Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, the second highest tally in the Show's history. Exhibitors report strong sales, advance orders and plentiful leads for future business. And that's what it's about, as much as a great day out for families and visitors to the GC.
Over the next few issues we will cover the highlights from SCIBS – the products, people and innovations to inspire and inform you.
Now brace yourselves for the Melbourne Boat Show, 3 to 7 July, Adelaide 17 to 20 July and SIBS, 31 July to 5 August at Darling Harbour. Then follow Darwin, Perth, Brisbane and Mandurah.
You can get a complete rundown of all the national and international shows, expos and trade events at the BIA website www.bia.org.au/calendar-of-events.html, and we will feature the standouts on the calendar each issue, including those that AIMEX is adding to its list, those in new markets and all the opportunities exhibitors and visitors can enjoy.
This week, we have a profile on Navico, coinciding with its CEO visiting Australia for SCIBS. Jens-Thomas Pietralla spoke at length with Marine Business News about the company's plans for the development of each of its brands, trends in marine electronics and the importance of our region in the global scheme of things. We rank second after the US market!
Innovation in the marine space is also foremost in the minds of Garmin, preparing to market and distribute its products independently from GME from 1 July. The new National Marketing & Sales Manager, Matthew DeMoss talks about the aims of the company and the many new products it will launch downunder over the next 6 months.
The AMIF held its Australian Marine Awards during SCIBS, as did the Australian Superyacht fraternity, so we list all the winners and sponsors, as well as some of the judges' comments about this year's entries.
Another WA company is going great guns. Strategic Marine in WA has come a long way from back yard boat builders in 2000 to become one of the leading manufacturers of high speed aluminium ships in Australia and to date has designed and built more than 322 vessels. It's now expanding to Vietnam and Mexico and fills us in on some of the opportunities that those markets offer.
The Raymarine “takeover” amounted to nothing, and most of those companies revealed by the world's media as “secret bidders” were mildly amused to see their names in print.
Discussions have been terminated, Raymarine is not on the market and unfortunately for the UK manufacturer, its share price dropped dramatically, mostly attributed to “weak US retail and dealer channels, a slow start to the year in some European markets and delays in new product launches”.
Locally, Raymarine is experiencing sales growth. New MD, Ben Bowley has joined the company from Panasonic and Apple and with just 6 weeks on the clock, says he is looking forward to product launches, innovation and taking the brand to new heights.
There's plenty of news, profiles on the people who make the marine business great and I believe, something from each facet of the industry. If you can't find your sector represented, let me know and we'll seek out the latest.
Thanks for the emails, calls and comments in person about Marine Business News. Hope we continue to help you in your business.
