Tasmanian Fishing Report - 23 February 2022

by Spot On Fishing Hobart 24 Feb 2022 03:12 PST 23 February 2022

Saltwater

Kingfish
Kingfish continue to be most anglers' target over the last week. Good numbers have been caught through the Derwent River, North West Bay, Blackmans Bay and further afield along the East Coast from Port Arthur to St Helens. Its looking like one of the best years yet for numbers.

Sand Flathead
Have been fishing well with good numbers and sizes tending to be larger than average in the Marion Bay and Dunalley area.

Australian Salmon
Some fantastic Salmon (2-3kg) have been caught over the last week, most as a bi catch while chasing the Kingfish.

Garfish
Good reports of some decent size and numbers being caught in most estuaries at the moment.

Snapper
Have been a little quiet the last week.

Calamari
Still the odd squid or two about in the Lower Derwent around Blackmans Bay, South Arm and Bruny.

Snotty Trevally
The odd report of the Derwent and Storm Bay producing a few good Snotty in the last week.

Tuna
Bluefin, Albacore and Striped Tuna have all been caught inshore the last few days. Bluefin numbers appear to be on the rise with a few substantial sized Albacore in the mix.

Let's hope they continue for the Tuna Club of Tasmania's Spot On Shimano Light Line Shootout being held this Saturday out of Pirates Bay. Good Luck to all competitors.

Mackerel
Large numbers have been widely reported.

Bream
Have been caught moving along the shore of the Derwent in really good numbers, and on a variety of fishing methods over the last week. It's a great time of year to try a new technique with bream feeding well.

Freshwater

Craigbourne Dam
Plentiful numbers of Redfin Perch have been caught, a very underrated table fish. The odd Trout has been reported.

Little Pine Lagoon
For the anglers willing to put some time in, it has also been fishing ok on the fly.

Tyenna River
Anglers have been reporting Trout are eager to sip a dry fly or take a well-presented lure. Anglers finding it has been fairly sheltered from the windy weather.

Western Lakes
The anglers that have been doing longer walks to more remote lakes have been rewarded with good quality fish.
