Youth Foiling Gold Cup Act 3 at Cagliari - Day 2

by 69F Sailing 22 Oct 2021 13:16 PDT 21-31 October 2021

Light winds characterised the second day of racing in the Cagliari leg of the Youth Foiling Gold Cup.

The qualifying races in the third leg of the 69F circuit, reserved for under-25 crews, continued today with the thermal breeze from the south filling in slightly later than expected. After a short wait ashore, crews were called onto the regatta course shortly after 2 p.m.

During the afternoon the six races scheduled were all completed, with a stable breeze that never got above 10 knots.

The team from the Netherlands on "Dutch Sails - Janssen de Jong", continued to dominate, winning all four races and consolidating their lead in the overall standings with a delta of 8.5 points over the Italian team, Young Azzurra. The Italians suffered a penalty at the start of the second race for having invaded Team Argentina's virtual "safety bubble", a 2-metre no-go zone around each of the boats.

Team France had a great day and demonstrated a remarkable improvement on the water, consistently achieving top-three finishes and managing to win the fourth race of the day. Taking the helm for the first time on the 69F is young sailor Margaux Billy, vice-champion at the Nacra 17 World Junior Championships, held in Gdnya (Poland) in July. Completing the team are Emile Amoros on the mainsail, who represented France at the Olympic Games in Tokyo on the 49er, and Charles Dorange - three times silver medallist at the ISAF Youth World Championships (2014, 2015, 2016) - in the role of flight controller.

Margaux Billy - Team France / La Rochelle Nautique

"Today conditions were really good, the wind rose and we managed to do all the planned flights. It was less wavy than yesterday, so we had a lot of fun! it was more simple to sail. The boat it's very interesting, it has some similarities with the 420 but flies like a nacra 17. we enjoyed it a lot with the two guys. So, on the boat we are three, so this changes a bit on my habits, but the communication is quite smooth with the others, we manage to understand and decide what we have to do and how to manage the boat. I'm discovering everyday new things about this event..It's really top! I never sailed this boat before the start of this event, and it's really like on the pictures! it's fantastic, it gives you thrills specially once you start flying."

Teresa Romairone & Diego Cittadini - Youth Team Argentina / Yacht Club Argentino

"We sail together in the Nacra 17 and this our first time onboard Persico 69F. We had a lot of fun today. We did four races where we had some problems but we got also a second and third place. Eventually we did well, fighting with the top teams. We really enjoyed and we are learning something new everyday."
