Maurizio Schepici and Giampaolo Montavoci set the UIM (World Motorboat Federation) world record in Messina with the 70 miles Messina-Vulcano-Messina covered in 51 minutes and 54 seconds.

Result obtained in the first of the three planned attempts for the world record in the Pleasure Navigation category of the UIM world federation.

A strong sirocco wind marked the morning, which however did not affect the attempt: "Up to Milazzo - said Schepici, born in Messina - we found a meter of wave, but then with a little less rough sea we pushed at most. I dedicate this record to all my fellow citizens". The Tommy One boat was built in the Metamarine shipyards, with a kevlar structure, expanded pvc and again kevlar, about 7,000 kg. for 14.60 meters, it is equipped with two Seatek twin-turbo diesel engines of 10,300 displacement each with a development of approximately 950 horsepower. The Marina di Nettuno has been the organizational beating heart in recent days, guaranteeing hospitality and professionalism.

The 44-year-old Schepici has already won the World Endurance Group B Championship and is vice-champion in Group A. The 60-year-old Venetian Montavoci also boasts several Italian titles and a long militancy in the Class 1 world championship.

At the end of the event, World Powerboat Federation President Raffaele Chiulli said: "Messina has shown its competence in order to organize international sporting events, highlighting the full potential of our sport. This event demonstrated that powerboating has great potential thanks to pilots such as Schepici and Montavoci. The UIM in Messina has found great enthusiasm and passion for powerboating. A special thanks to the Schepici-Montavoci Team and to all those who contributed to the success of the event in complete safety."
