On Thursday morning the five participating boats of the Nord Stream Race crossed the finish line in front of the Kronstadt peninsula near St. Petersburg. The overall result was clear: Team Russia representing Leviathan Sailing Team is the winner of the Nord Stream Race.

The Russians won the Nord Stream Race Trophy for the four legs of the offshore competition, as well as the Nord Stream Race Inshore Trophy for the 4 inshore races in Kiel, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki. They also won the Nord Stream Cup, the overall victory.

From a race start for Leg 4 in dreamy conditions from the Archipelago of Helsinki, with increasing winds and boatspeeds of up to 18 knots, the fleet embarked on a fast race to St. Petersburg, encountering extremely harsh conditions along the route. The German team narrowly avoided catastrophe when their bowman was wiped overboard by a big wave, hanging on by the railing before he was brought safely back on board. After a gruelling final leg, eventually the boats arrived at St Petersburg Yacht Club, the organizing authority for the Nord Stream Race.

From 23 June to 5 July, the 1,000 nautical mile race course followed the Nord Stream pipeline from Kiel to Saint Petersburg, with stopovers in Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki. The best yacht clubs of the National Sailing Leagues from the Baltic countries Denmark (Kongelig Dansk Yachtklub), Finland (Åländska Segelsällskapet), Germany (Norddeutscher Regatta Verein), Russia (Russia Leviathan Sailing Team) and Sweden (Kungliga Svenska Segelsällskapet)competed this year in a fleet of one-design ClubSwan 50 racing yachts. The aim of the Nord Stream Race is summed up by the race slogan "Connecting Baltics through Sport". It's about using sport to bring together sailors from different countries in the Baltic region for a friendly competition and cultural exchange.

Oliver Schwall, NSR Race Director: "The eighth edition of the Nord Stream Race 2019 was outstanding. Exciting competitions, great stop-over events and deserved winners. Together with our partners Gazprom, Nord Stream AG, the participating and hosting clubs we made our motto "Connecting Baltics through Sports" come true.

Since its inception in 2012, the Nord Stream Race has been hosted by the St. Petersburg Yacht Club with the support of Gazprom and Nord Stream AG. At 1,000 nautical miles and following the route of the Nord Stream Pipeline, this has become established as the most demanding and prestigious offshore race in the Baltic region.
