Keyhaven Yacht Club Spring Series - Races 4 & 5

by Sarah Desjonqueres 8 Apr 2019 04:18 PDT 7 April 2019

Keyhaven YC Spring Series continued on Sunday with a light north easterly overseeing events. The start line attracted 13 boats, including 2 Scows in a race that saw total Finn domination with only Bye (Laser) managing to separate the posse in the second race.

The Race Team had laid a perfect beat which split the fleet right down the middle, half choosing to go north, the rest south, a leg down which the Finns flew, creating an unassailable lead by the time they had reached the windward mark. As the Finns slowly pulled away from the rest, a battle between Grisley, Moss, Hurst and Steel was in full swing, a battle in which Grisley eventually came out on top in both races. Further down the fleet Bye (Laser) and Jardine (Laser) were fighting it out for 5th and 6th place behind the Finns with Jardine bagging the bragging rights in the end.

As the morning wore on, the wind started to decrease causing the Race Team to shorten to a triangular course. Once more, the race witnessed a great, even start and some very close racing for the first lap, Jardine holding the lead in his Laser until the leeward mark and then the Finns slowly dominating thereafter. Bye also sailed hard managing to pip Jardine in the end and squeeze in between Moss and Steel after results correction.

The two Scow sailors had a win each, Turner winning the first race and Edwards making the most of the tidal conditions to take the second race. Current leaderboard positions: Fast Class 1st. Cy Grisley (Finn) 2nd. Rob Langley (Laser) 3rd Mark Jardine (Laser) Scow Class 1st Jo & Richard Edwards 2nd John Turner & Marigold de Jongh. Next racing will be Spring Series races 6 & 7 on Sunday 14th April at 17:00.

Can bad weather actually lead to more sailing? There's been no getting away from the fact that it's been a pretty miserable start to 2024 weather-wise in the UK.
