January saw Harlow (Blackwater) Sailing Club in Essex run their season opener: The Icicle Race. A total 43 boats from six different clubs competed, making the most of some early season sailing. The wind was a steady force 2-3 making for some close racing throughout the fleet.

The short leg to the first mark meant that the rounding was very crowded but, apart from the first boat to arrive who passed the mark the wrong side, all got round safely. The next leg saw the fleet split either side of the river. Unfortunately for those who took the option, the north shore did not pay off and the south shore sailors opened a small gap.

A trip out to Osea Island saw Mark Maskel and Nigel Shephard (BSC) in their Fireball establish a large lead on the water but, with the strength of the breeze favouring the Kestrels, it was Paul and Sally Grey (MBSC) who made the most of their good start to take the trophy on handicap.
