Volvo Ocean Race - Leg 3 set for a squally start

Strong winds are forecast for the start of Leg 3 of the Volvo Ocean Race.

Predictwind is showing winds expected to average just below 30kts for the race start gusting 45kts and then increasing later in the afternoon.

However, at 0600hrs local time, the wind was gusting over 60kts, and the tablecloth of white cloud was flowing off Table Mountain.

The fleet is expected to experience strong winds for the first week as they head into the Southern Ocean and the 6500nm leg to Melbourne.

The video broadcast can be seen live on Sail-World.com starting with the Dockout Show at 0920UTC.

Leg 3 gets underway at 1200UTC or 1400hrs local time, with the seven-boat fleet sailing a short circuit of the Bay before setting course for Melbourne.

Overall leader is the Spanish flagged MAPFRE with 19pts, with Dongfeng Racing 1pt astern on 18pts.

Leg 3 is a double points scoring leg.
