Twenty-five boats, ranging from Optimists to Phantoms, set off on their long way in a moderate northerly at Bowmoor Sailing Club on Saturday, 14th July. Each boat had at least two sets of crew who were required to change over at least three times en route. The Phantom helmed by Mike Tustin and Olly Hopkins made a promising start, with the fastest laps on corrected time in the first half-hour.
They were being dogged by the Solos of both Ross Harvey and the pairing of John Beagley and Jessie Lawrence with the Laser helmed by Rick Plummer and Rob Napier. The wind died to next to nothing during the middle third of the race and lap times increased considerably. Eventually, a South-Westerly began to appear to give some relief. Lap times had ranged from 12 minutes from a Phantom to a very determined 1 hour and 23 minutes from an Optimist. However, all boats were still going at the end of the six hours giving all a sense of achievement.
With a number of people camping despite the rain, the weekend was topped off by a Barbecue, live music and a disco. Congratulations to Adrian Waghorn for winning the main raffle prize which was a Mountain bike. Photographs can be seen on the Bowmoor Face book page with hopefully more to follow in the next few days.
