RS Feva Open at Upper Thames Sailing Club

Eleven visitors and eight club boats were treated to a fantastic sunny autumn day with a southerly breeze that gradually strengthened during the day. A series of four races gave lots of boats a taste of the top ten, but a few names featured every time, even though river sailing with its puffs, holes and shifts was new to many of them.

Committee boat starts made the most of the one sided beat and the wind direction meant there were more opportunities than usual for the Fevas to fly their kites on this stretch of the river. The close racing and handy river bank viewing made for great entertainment for all the families and friends who came along to support the racers.

The fleet was well behaved for the start of Race 1 but all the competitive instincts came out for Race 2, pushing so many of the fleet over the line a general recall was needed. The Race Officer had the black flag handy but didn’t need it in the end. Chay and Stirling Taylor put together the most consistent set of results, counting two firsts and a second to comfortably win the day. There was only one point separating Matt Hill and Jess Eales in second place and Patrick Donovan and Jonny Crossley in third. Will Robinson and Joe Hills came in fourth.

Sunday was what I'd count as the start of my 'sailing season' While I had sailed a couple of times already this year, Sunday was what I'd count as the start of my 'sailing season'. It's been a pretty grim February in the UK so the days getting longer and a bit drier is welcome. Posted on 18 Mar
