Challenging conditions prevailed for Day 1 of the three day VX One Championships in Lake Macquarie hosted by Lake Macquarie Yacht Club. Andrew York's 'Tachyon' leads the series with one day's sailing to go.

'The Beast' skippered by Michael James, had a great start on Day 1 despite sailing with only two instead of the regular three. She currently lies in second place overall. Two boats were tied for third place overall after six races.

A number of boats battled in the fresh conditions to stay upright - with a few capsizes on the second leg of the second race on Day 1 - but overall some very impressive downwind legs showing off the power of these versatile sports boats.

The VX One Design is a sportsboat capable of being sailed bu two or three crew. She was designed in the USA by Brian Bennett, designer of the successful Viper sportsboat.

Nine boats from Australia and New Zealand have entered the regatta.
