Race Management Course well received
A Yachting New Zealand Race Management Course
held last weekend at Takapuna Boating Club was extremely well received
by participants with feedback praising the work of facilitators John and
Linda Parrish.
“It was fantastic,” writes Tania
Ruri. “Everyone that attended was so impressed with the whole
weekend. It was extremely informative, relevant and all of us felt that
we had learnt so much.”
“John and Linda Parrish were
excellent as Tutors – as well as learning as much as we did it was a
really enjoyable seminar to attend because of them. For me, I had a heck
of a lot to learn and I walked out feeling very satisfied with the
skills Linda and John had taught me.”
“This was a very well run
Seminar and an excellent learning event for any person interested in
becoming involved with Race Management.”
Fellow participant, Andrew
Beavis, had this to say: “I think this course was run to the highest
standards and John and Linda’s preparation, presentation were the most
professional I have seen in a long time, including any commercial
presentations.”
“Their methods were thorough and
ideas and concepts were clearly presented. New Zealand Yachting is
fortunate to have such people to run this course.”
Indeed we are! For the full
schedule of Seminars and Training offered by Yachting New Zealand visit our website.

CAMPER takes in the sights of London
ETNZ News: CAMPER,
Emirates Team New Zealand entry in the Volvo Ocean Race has marked its
arrival in Europe ahead of the start of the race with a sail-by of
London’s historic Tower Bridge.
Image: Ian Roman/Volvo Ocean Race
The trip up the Thames and sail
through of Tower Bridge by the Volvo 70 yacht continues a tradition
began by earlier Kiwi entries in the Volvo Ocean Race such as Lion New
Zealand and New Zealand Endeavour.
Skipper Chris Nicholson said it
was a real honour to bring CAMPER into the heart of London.
"Today effectively marks the
beginning of our build-up campaign in Europe ahead of the start of the
race on November 5 in Alicante, Spain.
"It’s a great way to thank our
supporters and sponsors while continuing an iconic Kiwi Volvo
tradition.”
CAMPER’s time in London however,
was brief and the yacht has already headed back down river bound for
France and Spain, where the build-up programme and further race
preparation will continue.
Emirates Team New Zealand
managing director Grant Dalton, a veteran of seven round-the-world
races, was delighted to see CAMPER carrying on the tradition.
"This is a great way to mark
CAMPER’s arrival in Europe and the beginning of the final build-up phase
prior to the start of the race.
“I know what a thrill it is to
sail through the Tower Bridge and I’m glad that the CAMPER boys could
experience it as well.”
CAMPER arrived in the UK in late
August after being shipped to Felixstowe from New Zealand by Maersk
Line.

Canterbury Yachting success celebrated
The 2011 Mander Yachting Trust Canterbury Yachtie of the Year Awards were held on Friday 26th of August at Naval Point Club Lyttelton.
This event is an opportunity for
Canterbury clubs and class associations to give recognition to members
by nominating them in one, or more of the award categories.
This year The Mander Yachting
Trust was lucky enough, thanks to the generous support of Yachting New
Zealand, to have Olivia Powrie as guest speaker. Olivia gave an
interesting presentation to those who attended the awards about her
yachting history and the philosophy and preparation she and Jo Aleh are
taking in their preparations for the Olympics.
And the winners are…
Keelboat Sailor of the Year: Anthony Leighs
Anthony Leighs
campaigned his Y88 “Medium Dry” extensively in the past 12 months in
regattas stretching from Canterbury to Auckland. Highlights include wins
in the Canterbury Cup and the Waikawa Regatta and 10th at the Y88
Nationals.
Event of the Year: The New Zealand Sunburst National Championships 2011
The New Zealand
Sunburst National Championships 2011, organised by the Canterbury branch
of the NZ Sunburst Association and the PBBC attracted a record fleet of
38 boats including nine local crews. It was a very social event with
eight races over three days.
On Water Administrator of the Year: Shane Smith and Phil Folter
After the February
earthquakes many of Canterbury's sailing venues we rendered un-sailable.
Shane and Phil, along with a group of supporters, worked quickly to get
clubs sailing at other venues by creating weekly combined club sailing
on Lyttelton Harbour ensuring five Canterbury clubs retained their
members as a result.
Off Water Administrator of the Year: Graeme Hore
Graeme Hore, Secretary
of the Canterbury branch of the NZ Sunburst Association, spearheaded the
organising of the NZ Sunburst National Championships 2011 held at
Pigeon Bay. He organised race results, handicaps, sent out media
releases and ran the regatta website as well as competing and finishing
sixth overall at the same event.
Youth Sailor of the Year: Gareth Moore
Winner of the Starling
National Champs, the Starling Interprovincial Match Racing Champs,
(representing Canterbury), the Under 19 National Sunburst Champs, the
South Island Starling Champs, the Starling Canterbury Champs, the new NZ
Winter Starling Champs and the Canterbury Starling Match Racing Trials.
Gareth plans on sailing in the Australian Nationals and 470 Worlds with
crew Ben Goodwin later in the year.
Dinghy Sailor of the Year: Hamish Atkinson (pictured)
Hamish Atkinson sets the
sailing standard in Canterbury for the Laser Radial fleet and has
vigorously campaigned his Laser over the past 12 months with the
following results: 3rd 2010 World Radial Masters at Hayling Island,
England; 3rd overall and 2nd Master at the South Pacific Radial Champs
held in Brisbane; 4th Radial Master at the NZ Nationals, winner of the
SI Radial Masters and 6th in overall Radial Fleet.
Club Coach / Instructor of the Year: Alan Poore
Alan Poore is a
long-time member and former Commodore of CBYC since learning to sail
there as a boy. He has been the head learn to sail coach for the past
five years. Alan was the driving force behind such club initiatives’ as
purchasing polyethylene Optimists and the cut down sails for them
allowing the learn to sail kids to sail confidently in stronger winds.
He has a passion for “grass roots” sailing and CBYC.
The overall Canterbury Yachtie
of the Year award is awarded each year to one of the category winners
and this year the overall winner was Hamish Atkinson for his achievement over the past 12 months in the Laser Radial class.
RAYC welcomes in new guard
Royal Akarana Yacht Club has a new Commodore and General Committee after their recent Annual General Meeting.
Matt Woodley (pictured) is the
new Commodore with Mike Wilson as Vice Commodore and Nathan Bonney as
Rear Commodore. Nathan is currently on the general committee while both
Matt and Mike have served on the general committee in the past.
Fendall Halliburton remains as
Club Captain remains while the Club’s new treasurer is Craig Wilson.
There were five general committee members elected including, Murray
Gilbert, Anatole Masfen, Mark Taylor, Tracy Wilson and Warren Trethewey.
Special mention was made by Matt
Woodley, Fendall Halliburton and Murray Gilbert on the huge amount of
work Graham Jones had put into the club during the past three years as
Commodore.
Graham is largely responsible
for the upgrade of the Neptune Lounge and bar which were fully
appreciated at the AGM. Graham has also worked steadfastly on the
building project during a difficult financial climate in which to raise
funds for major projects.
“There was unanimous applause
for Graham and we are sure to see him at the club offering his
assistance in his usual affable manner. Thank you Graham, for the past
three years as Commodore and ten years so far at RAYC,” notes the Club
newsletter.

Titirangi sailing club opens doors to visitors
The 2011-2012 sailing season commences in October, and French Bay Yacht Club
– which is West Auckland’s only yacht club - offers terrific
opportunities for Auckland sailors.Five years ago, French Bay Yacht Club
in Titirangi was down to a handful of members struggling to keep the
club afloat.
Now, thanks to the hard work of a
dedicated group of volunteers, it faces a different challenge: keeping
up with the pace of growth.
The club now has a very well
regarded Learn to Sail program for children, coaching for aspiring
juniors, sailing courses for adults, racing for youth and adults, and
even has several youth entered in the Jollyboat World Championships.
On sailing days the reclamation
is bursting with brightly coloured dinghies, sailors, parents,
volunteers and spectators, and its program includes adventure picnics at
Cornwallis Beach, an annual regatta, and hosting of national and
regional events.
The club is planning for growth
of its membership, boosted volunteer numbers, extended its sailing
calendar, and is looking at ways to invest in its building, boats and
equipment, to ensure that this enthusiastic response continues well into
the future.
“What we have going for us at
French Bay is a fantastic facility for dinghy sailing at all levels. Our
most successful sailor is competing internationally, and we have many
new members who've only stepped into a dinghy this year,” says Club
Spokesperson Matt Hall-Smith.
“As a thriving club we're
actively promoting sailing to local families who possibly haven't been
down to sample just how good a day on the Manukau can be.
Whether you've sailed a dinghy
in the past, just want to try the sport, or want to get out on the water
whilst your kids sail we've got plenty of options to make things
happen, all in a very friendly environment. You're warmly invited down
to the bottom of Otitori Bay Road to see what all the buzz is about.”
French Bay Yacht Club Open Day –
Sunday 13 November, 11am-2pm (and famous French Market from 9am)

Junior & Youth Sailing
Scholarship winner places 2nd at CORK OCR
Young
kiwi Laser Radial sailor, Andrew McKenzie placed second at the CORK
Olympic Classes Regatta in Canada, hot off the back of a win in the
youth regatta which preceded it.
“Arriving with one day to
acclimatize on the back of 30 hours of travel was not easy however, my
Rotary host family made me feel very welcome and at ease,” reports
Andrew.
“The light and shifty conditions
of the CORK International regatta made for a challenging start. My pre
regatta winter training on Auckland harbour, in equally light and choppy
conditions, proved to be the perfect preparation and resulted in me
winning the Laser Radial youth event with five wins from ten races in
the 150 competitor strong fleet.”
The second regatta was the CORK
OCR, an open event. “The competition for this regatta was of a much
higher standard and included the top Canadian women Olympic trialists.
Conditions were better with predominantly 12-16 knots for the three days
that racing was able to take place although the other two days were
lost due to extreme weather. Consistency was the key. Eight out of ten
finishes in the top six was enough to secure 2nd overall. I am extremely
happy with how I sailed and have learnt many new things on big fleet
racing and boat speed.”
McKenzie, from Auckland’s
Kohimarama Yacht Club, was in Canada for the CORK Regattas after being
selected as the 2011 recipient of the Yachting New Zealand St John’s
Rotary Scholarship.
“It was an awesome couple of
weeks racing for the young guy who has two more years left as a youth
and will now come home to start getting ready for the coming year’s
youth selection trials aiming to make the NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team
to go to Dublin, Ireland in July 2012,” says YNZ’s Youth Head Coach Ian
Neely.
Euro City Napier signs up to support OptiWorlds
Euro
City Napier, Hawke’s Bay’s home of Audi, Volkswagen and Skoda is now
helping to drive the OptiWorlds New Zealand championship sailing event
for youth sailors forward, with extensive backing and support.
The OptiWorlds,
to be hosted by Napier Sailing Club in December and January this year,
will be attended by at least 200 young sailors from around the world,
and many people from within the local community.
Euro City Managing Director
Terry Elmsly says that the event is the highlight of the year for those
attending, and he’s pleased that his company, which was named the 2010
Audi Dealer of the Year, is able to show its support for an event that
benefits tourism in Hawke’s Bay.
“Some of these sailors will be
the stars of the future – the event is going to be great for Napier, and
we are very much looking forward to our association with the sailing
fraternity,” he says. “The local community has supported us in the last
six years, and this is an excellent method of giving back.”
Four months out from racing,
entries have been received from teams from 39 nations, including many
from Europe, South America and Asia.
New Zealand has a history of
proud success at this event: in 2007 Chris Steele won the event
outright, and Alex Maloney was the top girl and third place overall,
while New Zealand took the prize for top team.
Noppakao Poonpat from Thailand
is the current reigning World Champion, and top girl claiming her
victories in Langkawi earlier this year.
The Opti Worlds programme
commences on 20 December with a four day sailing clinic, and an
invitation regatta for all internationals and 100 of the top New Zealand
Optimist sailors, runs on 28 and 29 December. There will be a welcoming
ceremony and registration event, and Championship Races will run from 1
January - 9 January 2012.
For the many families who will
be away from home for the holiday season, Christmas Day will be
celebrated at Eskdale Reserve, a beautiful Riverpark in the Hawke's Bay.
As well as Euro City Napier, the
2011 Opti Worlds NZ is supported by New Zealand Major Events, Hawke's
Bay Tourism, SPARC, and the City of Napier. Website design has been
