Dates to note: In accordance with the current Constitutional requirements: • Notice of any proposed alteration or addition to the Constitution shall be sent to the CEO not later than 90 days before the said meeting. Closing date: 9am, Monday 1st August 2011 • Notice of any alteration or addition to the constitution may be proposed by the Board or any voting member of Yachting New Zealand. • Notice of any resolution and/or nomination to be proposed at the AGM shall be sent to the CEO not later than 50 days before the said meeting. Closing date: 5pm, Friday 9th September 2011 • Nominations for the Board of Directors are to be received in writing to the CEO by a member yacht club no later than 5pm, Friday 9th September 2011. The positions of two Board members will be elected as per Article 14.3, 14.4 &14.5 of the Yachting New Zealand Constitution; the retiring directors (Richard Gladwell and Graeme Robinson) may be re-elected. Committee Selection The Board Advisory committees (KORC, Olympic, High Performance Classes, Junior Classes, Sailors with Disabilities, Cruising and Powerboat, and Race Management) positions as per the Constitution will be selected by the Board. Recommendations of suitable individuals should be made in writing to the CEO 9am, Monday 1st August 2011 so the Board's selection process can be completed on a timely basis. Sailing…Have a Go – goes on Tour! Easter weekend saw the beginning of a nationwide tour by Emirates Team New Zealand’s new Volvo 70 CAMPER. Following along close behind (well on land anyway) was Yachting New Zealand’s Sailing… Have A Go! trailer. The tour encompassed the East Coast of the country with visits to Tauranga, Gisborne, Wellington, Dunedin and then finally a full weekend in Lyttelton to support the people of Christchurch. “The purpose of having the Sailing…Have a Go! trailer complete the tour was to allow young sailors from around the country to go for a sail and get a close up look at CAMPER,” explains Ryan (Rowdy) Leatham, YNZ Instructor, Sailing…Have a Go! “This involved a couple of hours sailing on the morning of each port visit before those who had been on the water received a private viewing of CAMPER, including getting to meet their sailing idols face to face.” “While looking through CAMPER, two lucky names were drawn out of a hat - well actually often a sail bag. These two soon become the envy of every other kid - and adult - onboard as they got to go for a sail on CAMPER in the afternoon. I think most of them ended up steering at some stage as well!” says Rowdy. “Overall the tour was a fantastic success and it was really enjoyable to be involved in an experience that many of these kids will never forget.” YNZ extends a huge thank you to the host Yacht Clubs, the many volunteers they supplied to ensure the smooth running of each day and also to CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand for inviting us along on a great two-week tour. Jim Lott set to enjoy retirement Stalwart of the New Zealand marine community Jim Lott has retired from his position as Manager Recreational and Small Craft at Maritime New Zealand and will soon set sail for Chile on his yacht ‘Victoria’, in the opening leg of his retirement from the paid workforce. Jim has worked in the area of recreational boating safety for many years, where he brought a wealth of experience, knowledge and enthusiasm. His professional life has seen him closely involved with many maritime organisations including Yachting New Zealand - as a Yacht Inspector, Head Advisor to YNZ’s Inspector panel and Safety and Technical Officer. In recent years Jim has been a manager at Maritime New Zealand where he has been an effective advocate and educator for recreational boating issues. In 2010 Yachting New Zealand honoured Jim with a Service Award for the many years of work he has contributed that have benefited New Zealand’s recreational sailors, at the Yachting Excellence Awards held in November. Jim has been a keen yachtie all his life and has encouraged many others to enjoy the wonderful diversity of our sport. He has successfully competed in many events, from harbour races to offshore and he has cruised New Zealand and the world, on ‘Victoria,’ the lovely boat he built. Yachting New Zealand applauds Jim for his tireless work, and wishes him well as he embarks on this next voyage and those that follow. Correction Last issue included a story - YNZ brings yachting back to Hutchwilco Boat Show – which incorrectly attributed the design of the Opti wing to Mike Drummond. “All I did was show Logan Beck and James Turner how to put it together,” corrects Mike. “The wing itself was built by Ben Hall for an A-class catamaran – the top section fitted the Opti perfectly.” High Performance & International ISAF World Cup, Netherlands – Bronze for Burling and Tuke NZL Sailing Team 49er sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke won bronze in the fifth round of the 2010-2011 ISAF Sailing World Cup Regatta which concluded in Medemblik, the Netherlands at the weekend. Image Peter Burling and Blair Tuke © Delta Lloyd Regatta Sailed predominantly in strong winds and choppy conditions the kiwis moved up into medal contention as the regatta progressed and secured the podium finish in the final medal race. With a relatively wide points spread among the top three the kiwis had little chance to climb further up the ladder particularly when racing on the penultimate day was cancelled, but they gave it their best shot in the last race “After opening up a nice lead they capsized on the second downwind near the top mark - they were in a lull and were then hit by a gust,” explains Richard Burling, Peter’s Dad. “It cost them a bit as they had their gennaker up.” They crossed the line in 8th for the bronze medal. Steve Morrison and Ben Rhodes took the gold medal for Great Britain, while Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen from Australia won silver. A fleet of 39 were competing in the 49er – a high performance skiff – in Medemblik with an even larger fleet expected to be at the next round of the World Cup in Weymouth, UK. Miranda Powrie of New Zealand finished tenth in the Laser Radial class in Medemblik securing her best ever ISAF Sailing World Cup result. “I qualified for my first world cup medal race in 9th place, with the possibility to get to 7th, if I put two boats in between me and the Aussie and four in between me and the Belarussian,” reports Miranda. “It was a windy race - about 18-22 knots - and I had a good start. I was winning near the top of the second beat when my outhaul broke, I hauled it back in and jury rigged it but by the time I had it sorted I was donkey last and had to limp to the finish in 10th place, which dropped me down to 10th overall.” “Still I learnt some good lessons, for starters I am changing the way that I rig my outhaul when I get to Weymouth!” she explains. “I was very happy to make and experience the medal race.” The focus for the entire NZL Sailing Team now turns to Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta on from 6th – 9th June at the 2012 Olympic venue – Weymouth in the United Kingdom. Skandia Sail for Gold is the sixth of seven regattas which make up the 2010-2011 ISAF Sailing World Cup and a large kiwi contingent will be on the start line. Click here for all the New Zealand results from Delta Lloyd Regatta. 2011 Skandia Sail for Gold The countdown is on for 30 of New Zealand’s Olympic campaigners preparing for competition at Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta in Weymouth, UK. Racing proper starts on Monday 6th June and runs for six days. Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta is the sixth event in the 2010-11 ISAF Sailing World Cup series and given this is the venue for the 2012 Olympic Games Sailing Regatta the entry list is long and star-studded. Everyone is doing their homework on Weymouth! And you can follow the NZL Sailing Team on Facebook. Peter and Blair report... Peter and Blair report on their bronze medal winning performance at Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik... We have just arrived in Weymouth, UK, to prepare for our next World Cup event … Sail-for-Gold ... having won Bronze at the World cup regatta in Holland. Good to start our European season with some metal-ware. With the boat set up, we only had two days on the water before the event. Although this wasn’t ideal we made the most of it and come race day we were ready to roll. The Delta Lloyd Medemblik World Cup regatta was predominately windy, wet and cold – the temperature struggling to get above 12 deg C most days. Day 1 was very breezy- we sailed well enough to have the lead at the end of the day which was nice. Day 2 was lighter winds- we didn’t sail very well and we dropped back to 4th on the leaderboard. Day 3 & 5 the wind blew over 30 knots causing 49er racing to be abandoned without even getting on the water. Day 4 averaged 20 knots - our race scores of 4,1,2 moved us up to 3rd overall. A frustrating capsize very near the finish line saw a good lead disappear in Race 3 – short steep waves due to the shallow water made sailing downwind pretty tricky at times. Day 6 was the 49er top 10 medal race. Mathematically gold or silver was a possibility if we could win the double-points race and the crews placed 1st and 2nd finished at the back of the fleet… Half way through the medal race we were in front and in silver spot overall if the positions on the water stayed the same. A mistake just after we hoisted the gennaker on the second downwind had us capsizing and we were unable to catch up again, finishing 8th in the race but having done enough in the previous days to still claim 3rd overall. We will be better next time from the experience and taking home the Bronze Medal was encouraging. Overall a good start to the season and we are looking forward to racing again next week at Round 6 of the World Cup circuit - Sail-for-Gold. A quick turn-around - but we’ll have a few days on the water to work on the lessons learnt from Holland. Kiwi Paralympic Sailors - video Tim Dempsey and Jan Apel left Monday bound for the UK and Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta (6-11 June) where they will compete in the SKUD18 Paralympic class. The IFDS World Championships follows soon after (30 June – 8 July) at the same venue. “I will be sailing with Jan Apel as we continue our quest to compete in the 2012 Paralympics in the SKUD 18 class. In July last year in the Netherlands Jan and I qualified New Zealand for a place in the 2012 Paralympics and now we have to earn the right to be selected to represent New Zealand,” explains Tim Dempsey. “We are very fortunate that our coach Rob Hielkema will also be travelling with us thanks to funding from Paralympics NZ and Yachting New Zealand.” “Fellow Sailability Auckland member Josh McKenzie-Brown will also be competing at both regattas as he works to qualify New Zealand for a place in the single person 2.4mR Class.” For more information check out this promotional video clip on Youtube professionally put together for the sailors by Subzero Images If you want to support Tim and Jan you can make an online donation to their campaign. ETNZ finish second in Istanbul Emirates Team New Zealand finished the Istanbul regatta of the extreme Saying Series just one point away from winning the title.After five days of intense racing skipper Dean Barker, Glenn Ashby, James Dagg and Jeremy Lomas finished on 306 points, one behind the Swedish Artemis. Three teams went into the final race with a chance – Artemis, the French Groupe Edmond de Rothschild and overnight leader Emirates Team New Zealand. After 43 races at Istanbul, Barker was only five points behind Artemis. Scoring double points – 22 for the win - it was an achievable target. The New Zealand crew did their work well, winning the race. If Artemis finished fourth or further back in the fleet the job would have been done. Then they had to watch as Artemis climbed to third on the final gybe of the final downwind leg to take the Istanbul title. Full Metal Jacket has a win in Finland Full Metal Jacket – New Zealand Match Racing Team with Will Tiller at the helm – updates on a Grade 2 win in Finland… After three days of racing in picturesque Finland we have won the Maritim Cup Grade 2, topping the round robin with a score line of 9-1 and then taking out the semis and finals 2-0 and 3-0 respectively. The team put in a solid effort throughout the regatta to come away being only beaten once. After finishing the round robin on top of the leader board we chose to race local sailor Robert Nyberg. We led from start to finish in both races to put us straight into the finals where we met Olli-Pekka Lumijärvi. In the finals we won the first two races with clean starts and accurate breeze calls but in the third we started slightly disadvantaged but after picking a couple of shifts we were leading by the top mark and we extended from there to win the regatta. Team website wwwfmjracing.com Local Sailing Fiji Bound Cruising Division entrants to the 2011 NZL Yachting Trust Auckland to Musket Cover Ocean Race - Independent and Vision – departed Auckland yesterday, with the 13-strong racing keelboat fleet and three-strong multihull fleet preparing for a Saturday kick off. Among the entrants to watch this year will be Camper, ETNZ’s new Volvo 70. Camper recently toured the East Coast of New Zealand before embarking on a 2000-mile offshore stint to qualify for entry into the upcoming Volvo Ocean Race – so this isn’t the first blue water she has seen, but will be their first ‘offshore race.’ Multihulls make an appearance in the offshore race this year including Team Vodafone Sailing – the big red and white Orma 60 tri often seen on the Waitemata. RNZYS is staging this year’s race which can be followed via the yellowbrick tracker which will update every 20 minutes once the race is underway. If you’re in Auckland and want to catch the start line action, you’ll need to find a good vantage point for a midday start in the Northern Leading Area. The three clubs have agreed to collaborate in the conduct of ocean races and passage cruise rallies from Auckland and Queensland to Noumea, with a post event cruise rally. Races will start from Auckland on Saturday 2nd June 2012 and from Brisbane on Sunday 3rd June 2012. Chairman of RAYC Offshore Race Committee, Mike Wilson says “Sail Noumea 2012 is a truly international offshore event and will be unique in this part of the world offering a choice of competitive offshore racing or cruising rally to the beautiful South Pacific in company and with support of New Zealand’s premier offshore yacht club.” Races will be conducted under IRC and PHRF and dependent upon sufficient entrants, a two handed race division will be conducted. Rally entrants will be permitted unrestricted engine use for forward propulsion. The post race cruise rally south to the Isle of Pines, and possibly out to the Loyalty Group will depart from Noumea on Monday 11th June. This is expected to run for eight days. A new, all suites hotel, located on the beachfront has been selected as combined race headquarters in Noumea and attractive accommodation packages will be available for sailors, their families and friends. Travel and hire car packages are being arranged, and there will be an active social programme for all families and friends while the race is in progress, and for sailors, family, and friends on race entrants arrival in Noumea. Extra day for Bay of Islands 2012 The 10th Anniversary of Bay of Islands Sailing Week will be a special four day regatta in 2012. Registration will be on Monday 23 January with sailing from January 24th-27th, with time to get home for out of town boats over the long Auckland Anniversary Weekend which is observed on Monday January 30, 2012. www.bayofislandsailingweek.co.nz Top sailing season for French Bay Yacht Club French Bay Yacht Club finished the season on a high note. A year of hard work and focus on building on the club's excellent foundations, and making it a great, family oriented place, paid off when top Laser sailor Jim Quinn - who sailed with the club as a child and who still sails with it today - said it is the most family oriented of all the clubs he is involved with. A succession of youth and adult sailors graduated from their Learn to Sail programs, and the club continues to build its Optimist, Starling, Jollyboat, Laser, and Open class fleets for those seeking fun, low pressure sailing and racing. www.frenchbay.org.nz Get your news published.. Junior & Youth Sailing 2011 OptiWorlds Update: NZ Clubs benefit from OptiWorlds Boats The 2011 OptiWorlds to be held in Napier later this year has been the catalyst for the manufacture of 25 inflatable ribs to be used for coach boats at the event. The contract for the manufacture has been given to Southern Pacific Inflatables of Auckland. “The Southern Pacific RIBs being supplied are the well known Cormorant 430 and 470 models. These lightweight alloy hull RIBs are fitted with a two-seater jockey console, VHF and full anchor pack. Southern Pacific RIBs are still built in New Zealand and offer a six year warranty,” explains Jonathan Gravitt from Southern Pacific. “The motors are 30hp 4-stroke Hondas on the 430 and 40hp on the 470. The trailers are New Zealand built Enduro trailers from Hamilton and have features such as a solid rubber jockey wheel and flushing system,” he continues. Not only will the Southern Pacific Inflatable ribs help with the smooth running of this major international event, they will subsequently provide a great legacy for New Zealand sailing. After all the international visitors depart from the 2011 OptiWorlds, these boats will be purchased by Yacht Clubs from all around New Zealand at a substantially discounted price. “A generous grant from Lion Foundation to the event organizers was made knowing that these boats would be distributed back to the sailing community after the main event,” says Peter Dawson from the Event Organizing Committee. The 2011 OptiWorlds is expected to attract 400 competitors and team officials from 50 different nations – each nation bringing their top five sailors to Napier. The main event, which will be the biggest international yachting event for a single class ever hosted in New Zealand, runs from December 30th – January 10th and is preceded by an Invitational Pre-Worlds Regatta. NZIODA seeks SI host for 2013 Nationals The New Zealand Optimist Nationals are one of the largest national sailing events staged in New Zealand and are due to be hosted in the South Island in 2013. If your club is interested in hosting this prestigious event please send in your submission by June 30th 2011 to NZIODA. Admin, Safety & Training Race Course Names Changes Changes are being made internationally to the names that are given to race courses. To give an example; while the letter O still refers to outer loops, I to inner loops and W to windward/ leeward courses, the number of loops has changed. The number which follows the O, I or W refers to the number of "beats". To assist Clubs in adopting the new course names and ensure that everyone is using the same system, a catalogue with just about every imaginable combination of race course has been prepared by John Parrish. This Catalogue is available for download from the Yachting New Zealand website on the Regatta Documents Page, titled Course Diagrams and Tables 2011. The document is in "word" format so that the individual courses can be copied and pasted into your Sailing Instructions. The upcoming Series of Race Management seminars will allow an opportunity to cover these changes in more depth. Race Management and Judges Seminars Here’s the latest information on this winter’s courses… • The Race Management Seminar at Waikawa Boating Club on the weekend of 18th June is now fully booked. • There are still places available for the Wanaka Seminar on the 25th and 26th of June and also New Plymouth on the 9th and 10th of July. • High demand for the Auckland seminar on the 3rd and 4th of September has seen a second seminar added in Auckland on the 24th and 25th of September. The venue for that seminar is yet to be finalised. Judges Seminars • Level 1 Judges Seminars are scheduled over August and September in Otago, Wellington, Napier, Opua and Auckland. Club Instructor Courses If you are keen to share your sailing knowledge and would like to be involved in teaching Dinghy Learn to Sail Courses– then this is the course for you. A schedule of Club Instructor Courses is now available on the website Of Interest Bill Hayman – Wellington yachting man passes away Well known Wellington yachtie, and winner of the inaugural Tanner Cup in 1945, Bill Hayman passed away on Monday. His funeral service was held in Wellington on Friday 27th May. A long-standing member of the Evans Bay Yacht & Motorboat Club in Wellington, Hayman was a dedicated sailor of centreboard yachts from the 1940s until he was well into his seventies. Sailing Idlealongs during the fifties Bill moved on to the R-Class which he enjoyed for many, many years. “We had a lot of fun,” recalls Hal Wagstaff who sailed with Bill when they started out as juniors in the 1940s. “In 1945 Bill beat me in the Wellington trial for the Tanner Cup. He then went on to win the Tanner Cup in what was the first edition of the event. Graeme Mander was second that year, he started young, and Graeme went on to win it in ’46 and ’47.” “Bill was a staunch member of the Wellington sailing community – very popular and well known,” says Hal. “I’m sure he will be missed.” Bill is survived by his wife Shirley, and their family. Both from yachting families Bill and Shirley were childhood sweethearts, went on to marry and have three daughters. ChCh sailor 3rd at South Pacific Masters Champs Christchurch Laser Radial sailor, Hamish Atkinson recently travelled to Queensland to compete at the 2011 South Pacific Masters Laser Radial Championships hosted by the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. Racing was on Moreton Bay, Brisbane. Hamish reports… “The weather was mostly grey and drizzly but warm at 23-24 degrees so only one or two layers of clothing were required. The wind was 5-8 knots apart from one race at 10-15 knots. A thunder storm came through in the last race which was abandoned for safety reasons. “There were 27 entrants including three times World Champ Adam French and 2009 South Pacific Masters winner apprentice Danny Fuller. Christine Bridges current Womens World Champ, Kerry Warraker, a GGM, previous World Champ and Jan Kemp a light weather speedster and many more fast Aussies completed the mix. “It was a very well run regatta with seven races being sailed and no black flags-wow! The competition was fierce going by the generally high drop races. I had the most consistent regatta of everyone with a 7th as my drop race compared to Adam dropping a 12th and carrying a 10th and Danny dropping an 18th and carrying a 12th. “My results were a consistent 3,7,3,6,5,3,3 which secured me third overall and second Master. “Things I need to work on are starting, especially getting in the front row and holding my lane. Also, it was important to get the shifts on the first beat correct. I had super fast speed off the wind in planing conditions but had my fair share of ‘playing catch up’ after bad starts, missing shifts or having to do 720’s. “I was pleased with my speed in the light weather so felt my boat set up and technique was good. “Hopefully I can bring some knowledge back to Christchurch to share with everyone.” What’s on… Here’s a look at the major events, domestic and international over the coming weeks.
