The World Optimist Championship is set to take place from 15th-26th July at Fraglia Vela Riva and Singapore, top in the world in Optimist championships, has now become the first nation to sign up for the event. As well as taking a clean sweep of the podium at the last World Championships held in The Dominican Republic, Singapore showed itself to be among the emerging countries in sailing to have the highest percentage of wins.
It was the first country to pre-register online on the Fraglia Vela Riva site. Second to pre-register was Bahrain in the archipelago of 'The two Seas' between Saudi Arabia and Qatar in the Persian Gulf. The Garda Optimist Championships have started off with emerging countries from the Far and Middle East confirming that the championships will have a multi-ethnic flavour with many nations beginning to be a strong presence in the sailing world, at least at the juvenile level. Many future helmsmen will emerge from these World Championships on Trentino Garda so it's a date not to miss!
Meanwhile, the pre-registrations for the XXXI Garda Optimist Meeting are coming in thick and fast. It's the first event of the Fraglia season and takes place during the week of Easter. So far there are more than 400 registrations, double the number from this time last year when the Meeting became a Guinness World Record. News from a few days ago is that Martino Tortarolo, who won the Garda Optimist Meeting back in 2005 and who has since then joined the Olympic international circuit, has been selected for the crew of the brand new Team Italy which will take part in the Red Bull Young America's Cup in San Francisco next September.
