Update on Nathan Outteridge
by Simone Green on 14 Jan 2005
Talented Australian sailor Nathan Outteridge remains in Prince of Wales Hospital, in Sydney, after he underwent a major back operation late yesterday.
Doctors have said the operation was a success, however Nathan will have to undergo another operation next Wednesday 19th January. If everything goes according to plan, Nathan could return home after two weeks of intense physiotherapy.
A short while ago he was transported out of intensive care and moved into the Spinal Injury Unit. Tony Outteridge, Nathan's father, said he was in good spirits and has movement in his feet and legs.
Outteridge, the current ISAF Double-Handed (420) World Youth Champion, suffered spinal injuries in a car accident on Friday afternoon. He was on his way from his home at Lake Macquarie to compete at Sail Melbourne when his car left the road and collided with a tree just outside Holbrook, NSW.
Nathan has had a very successful year, winning several major regattas in as many as four different classes. In November Nathan again won the Australian Youth Sailor of the Year Award. This is the second year in a row he has been recognised for his outstanding achievements.
The Confederation of Australian Sport yesterday recognised Nathan’s achievements when they announced him as a final nominee for the Young Australian Male Athlete of the Year.
Tony and Jasmine, Nathan's mother, would like to thank the sailing community for all their thoughts and well wishes. Those that have Nathan's mobile number are welcome to send their wishes via SMS.
On behalf of the Australian Sailing community, Yachting Australia wishes Nathan a very speedy recovery.
