La empresa turca Alvimedica, con dos jóvenes regatistas norteamericanos ya confirmados en su tripulación, anunció el jueves en Estambul su participación en la Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15, que comenzará el 4 de octubre de 2014 en Alicante.

El proyecto de Alvimedica, una dinámica innovadora compañía fabricante de equipamiento médico, encajó a la perfección con el del equipo dispuesto a tener una tripulación con una mayoría de regatistas menores de 30 años y con la Volvo Ocean Race.

Alvimedica se ha convertido gracias a su apuesta por la entrada en el mercado estadounidense en la empresa joven que más rápido ha crecido en Turquía. Ahora se dispone a ampliar sus horizontes y conquistar mercados en el exterior, siendo Estados Unidos una de sus prioridades.

Los estadounidenses Charlie Enright, patrón del equipo, de 29 años, y Mark Towill, de 25 años, son los dos tripulantes confirmados por el momento. El siguiente paso será hacer pruebas para seleccionar a los mejores regatistas oceánicos jóvenes del mundo.

'El plan es que veamos gente en Estados Unidos primero, pero extender la búsqueda de jóvenes regatistas alrededor del mundo, incluyendo Turquía e Italia', señaló Towill, que fundó junto a Enright la empresa All-American Ocean Racing tras conocerse hace siete años en el rodaje de una película de Disney sobre una travesía y proponerse cumplir algún día el sueño de participar en la Volvo Ocean Race.

El equipo prevé tener una calurosa acogida entre el público en mayo de 2015 durante la escala de la regata en Newport, en el estado de Rhode Island de EE.UU., de donde procede Enright y donde se fundó All-American Ocean Racing.

El director del equipo será Bill Erkelens, muy conocido en el mundo de la vela de EE.UU. al haber tenido un papel importante con varios equipos de Copa América.

El director general de Volvo Ocean Race, Knut Frostad, se mostró muy satisfecho de poder anunciar el quinto equipo para la décimo segunda edición de la vuelta al mundo a vela.

'Es uno de los equipos nuevos más emocionantes que he visto desde que empecé a trabajar en la gestión de la vuelta al mundo a vela en 2008: gente joven que toma la iniciativa de empezar un proyecto', dijo Frostad.

'También damos la bienvenida a un patrocinador de Turquía. Hubo mucho interés en Turquía en la última regata y es un país donde la vela está creciendo. Es una empresa tecnológica concentrada en cardiología. Creo que la Volvo Ocean Race es uno de los retos físicos y cardíacos del mundo, ¡así que tendrán material para un interesante estudio!', añadió.

'Al ser una empresa joven, tenemos una tremenda ambición en el mercado global. Tenemos los mismos objetivos también en vela', señaló el director general de Alvimedica, el doctor Cem Bozkurt.

'Volvo Ocean Race es un evento dinámico que usa la última tecnología, justo como Alvimedica. Estamos orgullosos de tener la bandera turca por primera vez en un equipo participante en el evento de vela más exigente del mundo', concluyó.

Team Alvimedica se sumará a los cuatro equipos que ya han confirmado su participación en la próxima edición: Team SCA, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, Dongfeng Race Team y Team Brunel. La flota recorrerá 38.739 millas náuticas durante los nueve meses que durará la regata que terminará el 27 de junio de 2015 en Gotemburgo (Suecia).

Para Towill y Enright todo comenzó hace siete años, cuando los dos jóvenes locos por la vela se conocieron durante el rodaje de una película de Disney, 'Morning Light', sobre una travesía transpacífica en barco, y soñaron con la idea de que algún día lanzarían una campaña en la Volvo Ocean Race.

'Nos conocimos durante las pruebas, los dos consideramos ese proyecto como el comienzo de nuestro sueño, que es la Volvo Ocean Race', recordó Enright.

'Teníamos muchos veteranos de la Volvo como entrenadores en el rodaje de Morning Light, Stan Honey, Mike Sanderson, Jerry Kirby, y ellos nos establecieron las bases en términos de alto nivel en vela oceánica', añadió.

'No ha sido fácil, a pesar del buen comienzo que tuvimos con la película de Disney. Hemos pasado muchas horas intentando avanzar y todo ha consistido en crear nuestras propias oportunidades. Hemos tenido ayuda por parte de mucha gente para hacer esto realidad', concluyó Enright.

Con el apoyo de Alvimedica, Enright y Towill por fin convertirán su sueño en realidad y estarán en Alicante en la línea de salida de la regata In-port el 4 de octubre, fecha de comienzo de la Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15.
