Bill Byford and Duthie Lidgard sailing a Bavaria 46, Pebble Rebel, took line honours and 1st place in the 2007 New Plymouth – Mooloolaba Race, sailed in April of this year. They covered the 1283 miles (as the crow flies) in 7 days, 7 hours 37 minutes and were as much as two days ahead of the next monohull home.

'I think I’ll retire from ocean racing after this,' commented Duthie, who has spent a life on the water. 'It just can’t get any better.. ! We had 8 plus knots of boat speed in just 10 knots of SSW. Pebble Rebel is a fast and very comfortable boat.'

Their win is a great achievement for Bill, who has increasingly difficult mobility problems. It is also very exciting for a Bavaria to win such a prestigious race and speaks volumes for their performance as both ocean cruisers and racers.

Pebble Rebel is currently cruising the Whitsundays.

The first race was in 1970, when the only other solo race in the world was one from Plymouth (UK) to Newport in the US. After a lull of 9 years the race was revived for 2007.

Alphabet Soup - When it comes to appendages, we've had so many letters of the alphabet already When it comes to appendages, we've had so many letters of the alphabet already; C, T, L, J etc. The U rudders have always intrigued me. The answer lies in the higher flight of Gitana 18, meaning the rudders too are a half to one metre longer

Have it all. Do it all.
Massive statement that. In this case, it is not just defendable, for it literally speaks volumes One hundred and eight feet that is so utterly convertible, adaptable, and versatile, along with being augmentable, as well as safe, ultra-efficient, genuinely eco-friendly, and that's not just because it is all-alloy, as well as having solar panels.

Nothing looks like the maxi Edmond de Rothschild. Nothing. So let's take a deep dive... And yes, as the pictures show, this is all about Gitana 18, the maxi Edmond de Rothschild. Not some new wonder pill. No matter how many ways you distill it, those three propositions about performance are entirely what the new Ultim is all about.

Back where it belongs
The bicentenary has reinvigorated Cowes Week At the end of the day, bicentenaries are just a nice round number, but the effect they can have on events are quite extraordinary. They galvanise people to come together, to push harder, to put on a show and, most of all, attend.
