Tornado World Championship - Plenty of chances to win or lose

by Roland Gaebler on 7 Oct 2013
Team Gaebler in action Martina Barnetova
At the Tornado World Championship, we had one of the best sailing conditions ever. 10 races with winds between six and 25 knots. Every race day had its own tactical challenge with plenty of chances to win or lose a race. On the first thee days the racing was also combined with big waves, which creates high jumps on the Tornadoes.

Sometimes the boats were out of control and the 32 Teams from 10 Nations had a lot of emotional moments and some crashes. Our Team had a difficult start at the Championship. The heavy gusts in the beginning were quite challenging for us too. But with two wins in the last final races it can’t end better for us. It was real sailracing at its best!

We are very happy to win the Mixed Worlds title and the Open Vice title again. After our victory at the Open and Mixed European Championship this year on Lake Constance in May, this fantastic racing in Ibiza is a real happy end of the season 2013.

We sailed in front of the wonderful City Santa Eularia. The city and the club did their very best to serve us with a fabulous hospitality and a great race management. Each course they put the race-area was in the in the perfect place to deliver fair racing.

In many races we end up in a very fair racing duel with the Greek Team Jordanis Paschalides/Kostas Trigonis. In the beginning of the series they won a lot of races and it was looking they were unbeatable. With two race victories at the end, we went a bit closer to them. But they took their lead to win the title.

For sure it was one of the best Championship the Tornado Class ever had. Ibiza is not only party life, it’s one of the best sailing places in Europe too! Next year we have the Worlds in Perth/Australia in December and the Europeans in Travemuende in July 2013.
