Three Peaks Race - No eggs for Locky this Easter
|
Almost 20 years after his father Martin founded and then won the event, Middle Harbour Yacht Club's Junior Sailing Administrator Lachlan Pryor is to set sail this Easter in the challenging Australian Three Peaks Race in Tasmania. Sailing on the big Queensland catamaran Mobile Travel Agents Big Wave Rider, Lachlan will be crewing with round-the-world sailing star Jessica Watson and also backing up as the spare runner. The race which starts at Beauty Point on the Tamar River on Good Friday involves three sailing legs totalling 335 nautical miles and three mountain runs totalling 126kms. The sailing takes the crews into the wild waters around Flinders Island and then on down the East coast to finish in Hobart. The boat is owned and skippered by Bruce Arms who recently set the record for a non-stop singlehanded circumnavigation of Australia and he has also won the Trans-Tasman solo race twice. Racing the Three Peaks Race for the third time, Arms and his crew have secured the services of top runners Andrew Cromer and John Kent to run the three mountain legs at Flinders Island, Coles Bay and Hobart. Whilst a talented sailor in his own right, having represented Australia in the International Cadet Class and performed highly in the MG14s, Pryor is also a noted middle distance athlete and AFL footballer. Whilst still at school he was signed to a scholarship by North Melbourne FC and also represented the State at U18 level. After some years in Sydney AFL Premier grade, including two Best and Fairest medals with North Shore, Lachlan is returning to his sailing roots through his coaching and stewardship of the MHYC Tackers and junior sailing programme.
