Sydney Short Ocean Racing Championship 2010 - Tight Racing

by Louise Bashford on 27 Nov 2010 Loki, Sydney’s Short Ocean Racing Championship reigning champion, breezed past the competition in today’s IRC Ocean Passage Series, with perfect conditions the order of the day.

In contrast, racing the offshore course, the Farr 40’s worked hard in the three-metre swell in order to achieve a superior placing on their windward/ leeward course – paying off with finishing times just seconds of each other.

The field of Farr 40’s was highly contested with different yachts claiming the top spot in each of today’s four races. Competitors included New Zealand entry, Brett Neill’s White Cloud, Middle Harbour Yacht Club’s 'Estate Master' sporting crew members, ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Tom Slingsby and Beijing Gold Medalist Malcolm Page as part of the crew and Property Magnate Lang Walkers 'Kokomo' which recently placed second in the European Championships. After finishing four races in demanding conditions, two remaining races to the championship will be raced tomorrow.

Competitors in the IRC and PHS Ocean Passage Series had a tight start with the 53 race contenders vying for optimum position on the start line.

Loki led the charge, sailing out of the heads at 12.15pm before returning barely 2.5 hours later, claiming his fame whilst surfing the under kite. She left behind Ginger and Quest who had been in hot pursuit of the 63-footer out to sea. Quest finished second.
