The Pro-Vee powerboat European championship was being held on the Solent on a cool August weekend last year. International powerboat teams had made the pilgrimage to the Isle of Wight for several days of exhilarating racing.

With the start gun fired off Cowes for the circumnavigation of the island it was not long before the photographers needed to get into position for their return.

The lead boats were due back into the central Solent well inside the hour.

Leading the pack was Ceramica Panerei, raced by Italians Mario Invernizzi and Giovanni Carpitella. Just seconds after setting a new round-the-Island speed record passing Cowes, averaging 88.5 mph, the boat caught the side of a wave and catapulted the men through the air in a barrel-roll.

Having flipped reaching approximately thirty feet up the hull finally landed upright and continued on its course.

Unfortunately the team was disqualified as their engine cover flew off in the roll.

Out of seven photographers in a nearby press photo boat Ingrid Abery was the only one to capture the scene as it unfolded.

For the first time this sequence has been made available as one print. The A1 art poster is now on sale through Ingrid's website: www.ingridabery.com (formerly www.hotcapers.com) for £25 +p/p.

Also on the site are images from the Olympics, America’s Cup and many other sailing and powerboat regattas.

Enjoy!
