Skudo reveals surface protection products for the Marine Industry

by Kristen Basta on 23 Sep 2014
Skudo Deck Defend Skudo
Skudo, a supplier of temporary surface protection products, will launch solutions for protecting Marine surfaces at the IBEX show in Tampa, Florida next month. Skudo’s Deck Defend and Tack-Mat products will alleviate repairs and cleaning time due to damages and accidents that can occur during boat build, re-fit, transport or storage.

Deck Defend is a water-proof, temporary, peelable coating designed to protect non-porous surfaces from damage caused by abrasion, stains, spills and weather for up to 12 months. Deck Defend users also benefit from reduced cleaning time as the product prevents mold growth during the off season and keeps the deck clean from concentrated foot traffic during manufacture, remodel or maintenance.

Team Artemis relied on Skudo products to protect their 72 foot vessel during their fit-out for the 2013 America’s Cup, and boat builders in Europe and Australia have been using Deck Defend extensively. The liquid applied coating dries to form a tough film that can be used on surfaces including GRP, metals, stoved and cured paints. It is water-based and environmentally friendly.

Also at IBEX, Skudo will showcase Tack-Mat, a flexible Mat that temporarily adheres to any marine interior and exterior surface, including teak decking and built-ins. The LT (Light Traffic) Tack-Mat protects against scratches, surface abrasion, dirt, spills and stains from paint and oil, while the HT (Heavy Traffic) grade also resists damages that can occur from welding or heavier equipment. When applied to decking, Tack-Mat provides a slip resistant walking surface.

Launched in January, Tack-Mat was successfully trialed by Riviera, the largest and most awarded luxury boat building company in Australia, who used it on several crafts. In the construction space, Tack-Mat has been used on many jobs including the AT&T Stadium in Dallas and a University of Michigan Engineering building.

Skudo has a unique approach to surface protection, providing tough coatings and mats which temporarily adhere to the protected surface and peel up to remove. The durable exterior keeps traffic, impact, overspray, and stains away from the surface. At the same time, dirt and debris cannot get between the Skudo covering and the surface being protected. When Skudo is peeled up, it reveals a clean, damage free surface.

Brendon Smith, President of Skudo, has known for some time that the marine industry would benefit from this approach. 'There’s so much activity on a boat or yacht during build, renovation or fit-out that it’s inevitable that surfaces will get damaged somehow. I’m excited to show everyone how well Skudo can be relied upon to alleviate those problems and the unnecessary expense of repair and cleaning.'

In 2010, Smith brought the Australian developed Skudo Mat product line to the US and Canadian Markets. He’s committed to his customer satisfaction and continuing to develop revolutionary surface protection products.
