Seafarers take up flexible learning marine courses

by Heidi Walton on 26 Mar 2014
SW
Many seafarers requiring further commercial training are taking up the new flexible learning option offered at Whitsunday Maritime Training Centre located in Airlie Beach.

With Coxswains, Master Five, and Marine Engine Driving two and three all offered via correspondence with tutor support and mandatory practical elements, the option is a convenience for those in full-time employment.

Whitsunday Maritime Training Centre Training Manager Kaye Williams said those working fulltime in the industry don’t always have time to undertake a six to eight week course.

'To make things easy for students and their employers, we offer a workable alternative which includes a blend of assignments which are completed in their own time, tutor supervision and an optional workshop,' Ms Williams said.

The practical elements are delivered approximately every eight weeks over four to five days at the centre.

'When participants have completed their assignments, they can book for their practical assessment,' Ms Williams said.

'We have found this option is very popular and the Whitsundays is, of course, one of Australia’s most popular nautical holiday destinations.'

The training centre is known as one of very few private training facilities which conducts the Australian Maritime Safety Authority approved Certificate of Safety Training and Security Awareness Training (STCW95) with some of the practical elements delivered at the Port of Airlie marina and the Airlie Beach Fire Station.

It also received the Whitsunday Tourism Award for Tourism Education and Training in 2013.

Whitsunday Maritime Training Centre is based at the Whitsunday Sailing Club in Airlie Beach.
