Sardinia Cup - Azzurra second

by Giuliano Luzzatto on 18 Jun 2012
Azzurra - Audi Sardinia Cup 2012 Alessandro Spiga/YCCS
In the final race of the 2012 Audi Sardinia Cup, Azzurra slipped into second place in the overall leaderboard, overtaken by the American crew of Quantum that sailed a perfect race. The home event goes now to the books with a second place, a mere three points behind the leader, a small bump in the big picture of the championship. Next meeting in Spain, for the Royal Cup in Palma de Majorca, starting July 10th.

Riccardo Bonadeo, YCCS Commodore: 'As President of the Consorzio Azzurra, I share the crew's sentiment of regret for not having been successful in their intent to win on home waters. However, in my role of Commodore of the hosting yacht club I can only feel delighted by the races of such high technical level. Following the mistral that was too intense to allow any sailing even for these Mediterranean racers, we had a series of races held under light conditions but full of twists and turns, and photo finishes, proving that speed is not everything in sailing.'

Francesco Bruni, tactician onboard Azzurra: 'The Audi Sardinia Cup comes to a close with a difficult day for us, where we added up error upon error. The last race, the seventh one, was lost in the start and it's not a coincidence we are on a par with Quantum in terms of races won after a start ahead, having three victories each. They won today's start and we then weren't able to minimize the damage. We have to point out that given today's race course, the right-hand side was obligatory and there wasn't any alternative to the so-called 'horse race'

Vasco Vascotto, strategist onboard Azzurra: 'Given the fact we are not superstitious, the 17th of the month shouldn't have been a problem, instead it turned out to be a bad day, we committed many errors and we truly feel sorry. We would have liked to give satisfaction to our owner, our yacht club, our sponsor and the numerous fans that follow us on Facebook. Instead, it didn't turn out that way... we just have to look ahead, three points are nothing compared to the remainder of the 52 Super Series'.
