Sailing the new star sport, SCIBS world firsts, Marine13 countdown!
by Jeni Bone, editor on 23 Apr 2013
A batch of hot of the press news this week. First up, some insight from publisher, Rob Kothe, who was asked this week by ABC radio to comment on whether sailing had the potential to become the new shining light of Australia's national sporting prowess. It is already was his reply.
Read all about the latest injection of funding to sailing from the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), which has high hopes for sailing in the wake of the London Games where Australia won three of its seven Gold medals in sailing, thanks to superb efforts by Tom Slingsby (Laser), Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen (49er) and Mat Belcher and Malcolm Page (470M), among other strong performances.
After the Australian Sailing team's standout London 2012 performances, Yachting Australia had its Olympic funding significantly boosted by the ASC. And, as this year is America's Cup, sailing will ride a wave of high profile media coverage, putting it on the radar for a new generation of kids, all ages in fact, contemplating giving sailing a go for both competition and leisure.
Also this week, your last few days to register for Marine13 - which by now you should be well briefed on! There will be 101 speakers and 44 exhibitors over the two day event, as well as a pre and post-event program covering awards, social and networking opportunities and a harbour tour. Visit www.marine13.com to see for yourself and make sure you don't miss this 'industry milestone event'.
I will be there covering it for our sites, as many speakers as I can take in, exhibitors, sponsors and the Awards presentation on Monday night. Hope to see you there!
SCIBS is on the horizon, and with it, several world launches, including the powerful and impressive Alaska 49 Aft-Cabin-Yacht Fisher, and two models from the Hampton range: the Endurance 720 Skylounge and the Hampton 700 Skylounge.
There will be plenty to take in at the 25th anniversary show, so stand by for more news and exhibitor information in coming weeks.
Have a great week! Enjoy the sunshine and keep in touch with your own news and views.
