Sail Mooloolaba 2014 - Day One

by Darren Spence on 14 Jun 2014
Raptor (Stealth 850) had a great day in the light cpnditions - Sail Mooloolaba 2014 - Day One of Racing Teri Dodds http://www.teridodds.com
Sail Mooloolaba 2014 docked out yesterday with a fleet of 42 sports boat racing off the beaches of Mooloolaba over two race courses.

The Australian SB20 fleet are competing in their National Title and the Australian Sports Boat Association fleet were racing for the coveted Winter National Titles.

Huey, the God of all things weather, didn’t show us enough love for Day 1 with the breeze light and slowly fading into the sunset. The SB20 fleet managed to get three races completed and the Sports Boats two of the planned three.
Good times for some and not others.

The first four boats in the SB20 fleet are close, real close, invert race and in the overall results. After day 1 Russell Rooney (Back of the Bus Boys) shares the overall lead with Flirtatious (Chris Dare) with a two points lead to Karabos (Nick Rogers) and Red (Robert Jeffreys). All have sailed well enough to not record a finish outside the top four in any race.

The wind, or lack of it, proved a challenge in the Sports Boat fleet for some but not for crew on Raptor (Mark Buchbach) who took the win in both races on SMS and leads the series they won last year with a perfect score. Heath Townsend last sailed his boat Kaito at this event last year but you’d never know to be second overall and leading Division 2. Bruce Hollis and Norman Rydge have spent countless hours bringing Conquistatdor back to life and where rewarded with two fifth places and sit third overall.

Racing kicks off again today with 10.45am start and hopefully a little more of the good stuff.

Is it the wrong way? Some even think it might be the right way! Hobart to Sydney. The delivery home. Is it the wrong way? Some even think it might be the right way! Hobart to Sydney. Yes. The delivery home. It has always struck me that it does not get anywhere near the attention of the way down, but back up needs just as much care and consideration.
