Sail Mooloolaba 2012 - Challenging day for all

by Teri Dodds on 23 Jun 2012
Mark Buchbach’s newly launched Raptor set the pace today - Sail Mooloolaba 2012 Teri Dodds http://www.teridodds.com
It was a frustrating day of fickle winds for the fleets sailing in Sail Mooloolaba 2012. The IRC and Performance fleets were sent off on their Windward/Leeward course, after a short postponement in 5 - 7 knots of breeze. The Cruising and Multihull fleets started shortly after, heading out on a Passage Race around fixed marks.

In fading breeze, Ken Down's Farr 40 Bribie Star took line honours in IRC, with the light conditions suiting Gary McCarthy's Brilliant Pearl, who took handicap honours.

The Sports Boat fleet were keen to get away for their first race, and huddled around the pin for their start. The smaller Leech 650 Slingshot won the start but was soon overtaken by the larger Stealth 8.5 Raptor and Vivace who lead the fleet into the top mark. Due to wind angle and opposing swell, the top and offset mark proved a little tricky with many boats losing valuable places. This was all to no avail as the race was soon abandoned, due to lack of breeze.

Principal Race Officer Sylvia Talbot decided to abandon racing for the remainder of the day for the Sports Boats, IRC and Performance fleets.

Fortunately for the Multihull and Cruising fleet they completed their races, but look forward to some more breeze tomorrow.
