Sail Mooloolaba – Sports Boats lead entry lists

Sail Mooloolaba will be held from 22nd to 30th June with the Sports Boats and Trailable Yachts Winter Nationals leading off the week of racing across several sailing disciplines.

The Sports Boats enthusiastic event manager, Darren Spence, confidently predicts a minimum of 20 entries for this year’s event.

'With the event name change to Sports Boat Winter Nationals the entry could be as high as 25. We have never had more than 23 at an event anywhere in the country since ASBA was formed in 2007.

'The event is attracting people who perhaps can’t afford the time and money to go to Airlie Beach (Race Week) for a week and they want to come up and race in Queensland. It’s attracting boats from NSW and Victoria and even guys from WA who I am trying to get sorted into a boat.

'The fleet is also having a fair bit of growth at the moment. Guys that are importing boats want them on the water and they are all coming to race. There are also boats changing hands and new owners want us to keep organising racing.

'About five or six entries will come from outside of Queensland. There are at least three from NSW and probably another two from Victoria. Looks like I have Rees Howell’s WA guys chartering a boat. They came second at the nationals in Melbourne, so he has had a taste of success and is keen to keep sailing with the fleet.

'The Kaito should have at least two of my WA guys as they are keen to come over to sail for a weekend.

'There is also a chance of a guy from Tasmania who is looking to buy a boat out of the Gold Coast. Sail Mooloolaba will be his pick-up, delivery regatta before he heads back south.'

Sail Mooloolaba is a good lead-in for the Airlie Beach Race Week. There will be at least two or three southern boats that will stay on the Sunshine Coast until the start of the Airlie event.

'It seems to be good timing, fleet growth and enthusiasm; everyone is keen to come for a sail,' Spence said.
