Sail Mooloolaba - Another day in paradise

by Darren Spence on 15 Jun 2014
Vivace (John Rae) and Conquistador (Norman Rydge) - Sail Mooloolaba 2014 - Day Two of Racing Teri Dodds http://www.teridodds.com
What’s going on? The weather is normally not like this. It’s the Sunshine Coast after all.

With the water temperature around the same as the air temperature, overcast sky’s and variable winds, Day 2 of Sail Mooloolaba must have been a Sunday for Huey. He sleep in (we drifted). He woke up (we raced). He decided to go back to bed before a big night watching Rugby, AFL, NRL & Football (we motored in).

Two races where completed with the first in about 10-12 knots of variable breeze that shifted slightly further West just after the start to reduce the number of tacks required to make the first mark.

The Stig’s Audi Driving Cousin (David Ellis) spoilt the Raptor (Mark Buchbach) party by taking the first race after a faultless start and first beat. A faultless race really - the margin was 8 seconds.

Born again boat, Conquistador (Norman Rydge) from Sydney, put in another consistent day with a third in the first race of the day beating Viper QLD (Noel Leigh-Smith) by two seconds on corrected time with another two seconds to Stay Tuned (Graham Sherring) and then eight seconds to Vivace (John Rae). Less than a minute separated the first six boats on corrected time.

Huey was starting to dose at the start of the second race of the day and the fading breeze helped Raptor take race four and the final race of the day. Octopussy (Rees Howell), all the way from South of Perth Yacht Club, stepped up to take a second and we know who got third - Conquistatdor. The Stig stayed consistent to grab fourth ahead of Mister Magoo (Jason Ruckert) and Kaito (Heath Townsend).

Overall, it looks like Raptor has put the engraver on notice to take out their second ASBA Winter Nationals in the largest fleet of Sports Boats ever assembled in Australia. One point separates Conquistador and The Stig’s Audi Driving Cousin for second and third. Octopussy, Vivace and Kaito round out the top six with five points separating these three boats.

This is truly a National event with a QLD, NSW, VIC & WA boats making up the top four places.

Racing on the final day has been moved forward for a 10.00 am start. Yes 10am. Huey’s team had a big win last night and he’s cleared the skys and is sending in a South Westerly to wrap up the series for both the Sports Boats and SB20 fleets. So really, another day in paradise.
