Route des Princes - Vers une troisième étape off-shore à suspense

Si les conditions météorologiques, un peu musclées ce dimanche en baie de Dublin (20-25 noeuds avec des rafales à 30) ont contraint la Direction de course de la Route des Princes à annuler les régates in-shore de Dùn - Laoghaire programmées cet après-midi, elles s'annoncent beaucoup plus clémentes pour demain.

C'est en effet dans un vent de 7-8 noeuds que les huit multicoques toujours en course s'élanceront en direction de Plymouth, terme de la troisième étape off-shore de l'épreuve qui devrait se jouer essentiellement dans les petits airs et ainsi donner du fil à tordre aux marins qui vont devoir composer avec de forts courants en cette période de grandes marées. De quoi garantir un maximum de rebondissements, à la fois chez les Multi50 et les MOD70 - qui se tiennent dans un mouchoir de poche au classement général provisoire - comme l'indique Sylvie Viant, la Directrice de course.

Sylvie, pouvez-vous détailler le parcours de cette troisième étape off-shore entre Dublin-Dùn Laoghaire et Plymouth?

'Tout d’abord, les équipages vont devoir effectuer un petit parcours préliminaire (un aller et retour de 7,2 milles entre l’East Pier et la bouée Muglins) devant le port de Dùn – Laoghaire et sortir de la baie de Dublin en laissant le DST à bâbord ainsi que la petite cardinale de Kish avant de descendre vers le sud-est sur Bardsey, une petite île située à la pointe du Pays de Galles où sera attribué un premier point de bonus spécial au premier bateau de chaque classe. Ensuite, les multicoques devront retraverser la mer d’Irlande pour aller enrouler le mythique rocher du Fastnet puis filer en direction des Scilly où ils devront laisser le phare Bishop Rock à bâbord, très tôt mardi matin. A cet endroit, un deuxième point de bonus spécial sera octroyé aux leaders de chaque flotte. Dans la foulée, les marins mettront le cap en direction d’Eddystone via Wolf Rock où nous déciderons de la suite du parcours en fonction des conditions météorologiques. Nous aurons alors quatre choix : les faire aller jusqu’à Shambles Ouest (640 milles), jusqu’à Fairway dans l’ouest de l’île de Wight (700 milles), jusqu’à Tour Nab un peu plus dans l’est (750 milles) ou carrément jusqu’à Southern Head, à une petite vingtaine de milles de l’entrée du Pas de Calais (850 milles). Dans tous les cas, l’arrivée sera jugée devant Plymouth. A noter par ailleurs que le parcours des Multi50 sera plus petit que celui des MOD70 afin que les deux flottes arrivent en même temps, mercredi dans l’après-midi.'

Quels seront les points clés de ce parcours?

'Les principales difficultés à gérer dans cette troisième étape off-shore entre Dublin – Dùn Laoghaire et Plymouth seront les courants. Généralement, ils sont importants dans cette zone mais ils le seront particulièrement demain et après-demain en raison des grandes marées. De fait, les coefficients sont très grands en cette période de pleine lune. Tant qu’il y aura du vent, les bateaux ne seront pas trop gênés mais lorsqu’ils aborderont la pointe sud-ouest de l’Angleterre, le vent aura faibli et il est possible que certains soit contraints de mouiller en attendant la renverse. Ce sera également complexe à chaque passage de pointes, comme Lizard par exemple, ou à l’entrée et à la sortie du Solent. A ces endroits, les courants sont redoutables, il faudra vraiment être vigilant.'

Côté météo, qu’est-ce qui attend les équipages entre l’Irlande et la Grande-Bretagne?

'Globalement, ce sera une étape de petit temps. Le départ se jouera dans 7-8 nœuds de vent de nord-ouest qui se renforcera progressivement au cours de la journée pour atteindre 20-25 nœuds en fin d’après-midi. Les bateaux progresseront alors au portant mais une fois l’île de Bardsey enroulée, ils attaqueront un long bord de près jusqu’au Fastnet dans un vent mollissant. Après le célèbre phare, les équipages se retrouveront à nouveau au portant dans un flux de nord-est d’une quinzaine de nœuds en enchainant les empannages. Le retour vers Plymouth se fera logiquement au près dans une dizaine de nœuds de vent. Il va y avoir du jeu, c’est certain.'

Après le chavirage de son MOD70 survenu hier après-midi, le team Spindrift Racing organise actuellement l’opération de remorquage du trimaran blessé vers la Trinité-sur-Mer, son port d’attache. Il coordonne également le nettoyage de la zone de chavirage où seront missionnés, demain (si les conditions le permettent), des plongeurs afin de récupérer à bord d’une barge les parties du mât, les voiles et les câbles qui trainent encore dans l’eau. En ce qui concerne Jacques Guichard, l’équipier blessé lors de l’accident, les nouvelles sont plutôt bonnes. Le navigateur – qui souffre, rappelons-le de cinq fractures au bassin – est toujours à l’hôpital de Dublin mais son état de santé ne donne plus de signe d’inquiétude. Toute l'équipe de l'organisation de la Route des Princes lui souhaite un bon rétablissement.
