Jessica Crisp has made a solid start to the 2012 RS:X World Championships. Building breeze tested the sailors and after the opening three races in Cadiz, Spain, Crisp ended day one 18th overall following a 15th, a third and a 13th.
The breeze increased throughout the day with it consistently up around 25 knots by the time Crisp and her fellow competitors entered their third race of the day, and it’s only going to get stronger with the easterly Levante winds due to come through on Friday.
Crisp, who has traditionally been strong in lighter conditions, was in the mix in all three races and her day could have been even better if not for a broken cleat late in the day, with the triple-Olympian forced into the water during the final race to carry out repairs while well inside the top 10.
'Today was a good start to the Worlds, my speed was really good and I had a strong third in the middle race,' said Crisp. 'The results don’t quite show how strong I’m feeling but I’m in the game which is what counts. 'My speed highlights all the hard work over the last couple of months and I’m sailing much better than at the 2011 Worlds in Perth,' she said.
'They’re predicting it’s going to get up above 30 knots tomorrow which will make things interesting but today I was right up there with the crews who are at the front when it blows which was good.'
Competition is tight throughout the women’s fleet with the top three ending day one tied on points while Crisp is just 12 points outside the top 10. In the men’s fleet Luke Baillie is the best placed Australian in 53rd overall, ahead of Jimmy Levy in 90th and Patrick Vos in 95th. Baillie bookended his day was a 33rd and a 31st with race two by far his strongest with the Queenslander crossing the line 15th.
All three Australians showed good speed throughout the day but had some difficulty getting off the line at the start which ultimately cost them. Racing continues in Cadiz on Friday before a lay day on Saturday.
