Pegan and Amaral victorious at IFDS Worlds

by Event on 11 Oct 2005
Two bullets on the final day of the IFDS Single-Person Dinghy Worlds in San Felice Circeo, Italy, gave Bento Amaral (POR) the Championship title, while Zoltan Pegan (AUS) took honours in the Sabaudia’s Cup.

Pegan dominated racing in the 21 boat fleet, winning five of the eight race two drop series, with Amaral the best of the nine sailors competing using full servo assist winches to control helm and main and jib sheets. Amaral also finished second overall in the Sabaudia's Cup and Colin Johanson (AUS) was second in the Worlds.

The persistent low pressure system which has dominated the weather in Italy continued to be a factor for sailors on Saturday and both races were shortened due to the lift airs.

However, the final day, Sunday, proved better weather-wise, with the sun coming out for the first time and sailors enjoying a light 8 knot breeze on a course further out to sea to compensate for the strong currents.

The official closing ceremony will be conducted in Sabaudia's Town Square at 6pm on October 10 and will be an event to be remembered with the regional army band, traditional flag throwers and the Mayor in attendance.
