Croatia Cup Yacht Rally 2011 is being held June 10 to 25. Well known Sydney yachtsman Roger Hickman wears the 'pith helmet' in the next race after coming second over the line in the first race, which began in Kastela near Split this week.

The ninth year of the rally sees the one design non-spinnaker fleet make its way with a series of six passage races to Dubrovnik over a two week period. Race days are alternated with seven lay days when participants are free to explore the beautiful towns, bays and countryside along the route.

The Pith helmet, introduced by Emma Forster from Pt. Lincoln crew, skippered by David Buckland, is not necessarily awarded to the second place getter and in this case was won following a jib sheet over-ride, which called for quick action with a knife, an embarrassment witnessed in this case by Steve Barlow from the RSYS. First over the line was Carmenta which has been renamed Carmental.

This 2011 event has attracted crews from nine yacht clubs in Melbourne, Sydney, and Queensland in addition to the Pt Lincoln contingent and although it is competitive the fun element is just as important as some crew members not only don’t race but they don’t even sail. The 10 First 45’s in this year’s fleet make for a great sight on the start line and even the most discerning sailors have appreciated the performance of this yacht.

The most junior crew member on the rally will celebrate her second birthday with her four year old sister and both sets of grandparents as the family holiday together. The yacht is scattered with toys and the stroller is stowed in the aft locker ready for day trips ashore.

Mariner Boating Holidays conduct the rally each year along with other rallies in Turkey, Greece, Italy, Caribbean, Thailand and Tahiti. For more information email info(at)marinerboating.com.au.
