New Zealand Match Racing- Four teams tied at 7 points after 12 flights

by RNZYS on 15 Nov 2013
Pierce v Hazard Flight Nine - Day 2 - New Zealand Match Racing Championships - November 2013 RNZYS Media

After another light and shifty day on the water, 12 of the 19 flights for Round Robin One have been completed.

Highlights included Susannah Pyatt getting a point on the board, Minoprio recording a loss, Steele finding his form and the international teams holding their own.

Chapman summed it nicely 'The wind is flukey, but the racing is close and crew-work is improving. It’s been a big day but we are really happy to be in here Auckland.'

Gunwoo Park was thrilled to beat Adam Minoprio, a highlight for the team 'Tt was a great day sailing against some of the best guys in the world!' Park is currently sitting on 7 wins and 2 losses after nine races.

For Dave Hazard, RNZYS YTP Graduate, the racing has also been kind. Hazard beat current YTP member Pierce and is one of the highest ranked in the fleet. Pierce was first to the top mark but Hazard showed that racing is never over until the gun is fired.

New Caledonian Alan Quere summed up their racing 'We won all our starts today and were first to the top mark every time, however in this close racing any mistake often meant game over.' Fellow New Caledonian Tugdual Piriou is yet to put a point on the board however they had a great start in the race against Minoprio. As a crew that normally competes against each other this is proving to be a steep learning curve.

Staub, RAYC, said his highlight was the final race of today, winning against RSYS crew helmed by Tim Coltman by 25seconds. Not a lot in a 20 minute race!
Susannah Pyatt, current title holder of the NZ Women’s Match Racing Championship, the crew is work fabulous, the racing close, and winning against Piriou the highlight.

Tomorrow is another day and the forecast is not ideal.
For these crews this racing is close, the competition fierce and mistakes costly. There are over six flights to complete and it is still anyone’s game.
