IMOCA Ocean Race Masters New York to Barcelona 2014 - Una multitud es va reunir a les Rambles i a la plaça del Portal de la Pau aquesta nit per rebre Pepe Ribes i Ryan Breymaier com a guanyadors de la primera IMOCA Ocean Masters New York to Barcelona Race.

El duo hispà-nord-americà va guanyar la regata amb un temps de 14 dies, 2 hores, 44 minuts i 30 segons. No obstant això, en vista del seu cansament i dels implacables esdeveniments que es van desplegar davant d'ells durant l'última quinzena, hom podria portar-se la impressió que han estat al mar competint sense parar durant un mes o més.

'Ha estat un treball dur, perquè hem estat arreglant un munt de coses, en comptes de només navegar', admet Ribes. 'Com menys temps tens per dedicar-li a navegar, més estressant és'.

Breymaier hi estava d'acord: 'Quan empenys una màquina, a la màquina no sempre li agrada. No vam tenir cap problema greu, no va haver-hi moltes coses que ens aturessin: alguns problemes en el sistema informàtic i que vam destruir la pala del sistema del tanc d'aigua de llast, la qual cosa va afectar la nostra velocitat'.

I va haver-hi drama de principi a fi. Un dels moments més colpidors va ser en l'últim dia de l'Hugo Boss al mar, mentre s'aproximava a Barcelona, quan van ser literalment nocats per una monstruosa ratxa de vent.

Com Ribes ho va descriure: 'Avui va ser el primer dia que vaig veure el pal d'un IMOCA 60 sota l'aigua! Va venir un núvol que pensàvem que només portava aigua. Però no, eren 50 nusos i el vaixell tenia tot el tanc de llast ple i la quilla totalment inclinada i simplement va virar accidentalment i va bolcar. El pal va estar en l'aigua durant tres minuts. En aquell moment estàvem carregant bateries. El motor va començar a cremar… Podríem haver mort fins i tot sense motor ni bateria… No res, així que vam tenir sort'.

I aquest va ser només un dels seus dies dolents.

Igualment dures van ser les severes condicions que van experimentar mentre volaven creuant l'estret de Gibraltar. 'L'Estret sempre és difícil, perquè has de fer un enorme esforç durant 10 milles i saps que en l'altra part hi ha només 10 nusos', va continuar Ribes. 'Aquest vaixell amb 45 nusos és difícil de virar, és difícil de governar i véns de 13 dies en què ja has tingut la pressió damunt i estàs molt cansat. Després tens un altre dia més en què no pots dormir en tot el dia'.

L'Hugo Boss va recollir el testimoni de líder després que el Safran es veiés forçat a retirar-se quan el seu patró Marc Guillemot es va llastimar en l'acostament a l'Estret.

'Van navegar d'una forma brillant a través de l'Atlàntic', va admetre Ribes sobre el seu astut oponent francès. 'No sé quina informació meteorològica rebien, però anaven per llocs que per a mi haguera sigut impossible. És una pena que Marc es fes mal, perquè ho estaven fent molt bé. Però nosaltres també estàvem preparats per lluitar'.

Breymaier va coincidir a apuntar que Guillemot ha estat els últims vuit anys navegant en el Safran, mentre que Ribes i ell només havien estat dues setmanes a bord i mai sols abans de la sortida de la regata a Nova York. I això va ser molt després de tot el treball que havien desplegat per aconseguir que el vaixell estigués en la línia de sortida després del seu trencament de pal en el transport als EUA. Donades totes aquestes circumstàncies, va dir Breymaier, haurien estat encantats fins i tot acabant segons.

A més, durant els últims 10 dies l'Hugo Boss ha sentit l'alè de Guillermo Altadill i José Muñoz a bord del Team Neutrogena al clatell. No obstant això, Ribes va dir que els havien ignorat. 'No mirava enrere per veure el que ell feia. Li vaig dir a Ryan ‘podem guanyar, però si Guillermo va a la dreta, nosaltres no podem anar a la dreta, hem de cenyir-nos al nostre pla com hem fet fins aquí’. Així que no el vam cobrir'.

Per a Breymaier la IMOCA Ocean Masters New York to Barcelona Race ha estat un altre graó cap a la seva pròpia campanya nord-americana d'IMOCA amb l'objectiu de competir en el Campionat del Món Ocean Masters i la Vendée Globe 2016. 'L'Ocean Masters és genial. Aquest ha estat un esdeveniment molt ben organitzat. Ha estat sens dubte un pas en la bona direcció. Com més vegades vagi la classe IMOCA a llocs com la ciutat de Nova York, més interès hi haurà, i més gran es farà i atraurà millors patrocinadors que vindran a tots els esdeveniments i el convertiran en un autèntic circuit'.

De la mateixa manera que Breymaier gaudia de reunir-se amb la seva esposa Nicola i la seva família, per a Ribes també era igual: 'Què vull fer demà? Vull portar el meu fill Pepe a escola al matí'. Això li va fer guanyar una altra ronda d'aplaudiments.

8 Maig 2014 - L'Hugo Boss trenca el pal durant el trasllat del vaixell cap a la línia de sortida. El seu pal es va trencar en dos trossos, però la seva tripulació va poder recuperar totes les parts

28 Maig – L'Hugo Boss arriba finalment a North Cove Marina a Nova York, cinc dies abans de la sortida

29 Maig – L'Hugo Boss guanya còmodament l'Hugo Boss Watches Manhattan Charity Race, amb una tripulació de famosos, incloent-hi Jimmy Graham, jugador dels New Orleans Saints de la NFL.

1 Juny – Sortida de la regata: L'Hugo Boss navega a prop de Governor's Island per sortir del port de Nova York liderant, però aviat cedeix el primer lloc al Safran.

5 Juny, 05:30 UTC- L'Hugo Boss recorre 446,55 milles en un període de 24 hores, fent una mitjana de 18,6 nusos de velocitat. És el rècord de la regata.

6 Juny - Passa per l'extrem est de la porta de seguretat en segona posició, 28 milles darrere del Safran.

7-8 Juny – Comença el match race amb el Neutrogena a l'oest de les Açores i durarà fins al final de la regata. L'Hugo Boss cau temporalment al tercer lloc, per darrere del Neutrogena.

11 Juny – Havent estat 82 milles per darrere del Safran el 9 de juny, l'Hugo Boss s'apropa a 15 milles del capdavanter, entrant en una calma enfront de la costa portuguesa.

12 Juny – Pren el lideratge de la regata arribant a l'estret de Gibraltar, després de la retirada del Safran.

13-14 Juny – Molt poc vent per la costa espanyola

15 Juny – Colpejat per una ratxa de 45 nusos. Acaba a les 20:54:30
