Mining buoys boating, London Boat Show, Pantaenius partners with ASMEX

by Jeni Bone, editor on 15 Jan 2013
Another scorcher, on the east coast of Aus, with fires wreaking havoc and much despair in all our eastern states, and if you're in the West, it's hot and humid with Tropical Cyclone Narelle threatening. You only need read Dorothea Mackellar's poem, 'My Country' to realise it was ever thus. These extremes are a normal summer, just hazards we have to live through.

This issue, loads of fresh, original news, including on-the-spot reports from the 2013 Tullett Prebon London Boat Show, where publisher, Rob Kothe is discovering how that event runs, who exhibits, who attends, and some of the trends across boating, at the large and smaller ends.

From me, a look at the correlation between the fortunes of the Australian mining sector, commodity prices and exports, and recreational boating, again from PWCs to yachts.

The state-based experts who head up their respective boating industry associations shed light on how the mining sector feeds in to boating and what initiatives they are taking to capitalise on this wealthy sector, now and into the future.

In sponsorship news, there's a new partnership that promises to boost the profile and program of the 2013 ASMEX conference to be held at Sanctuary Cove, 21 & 22 May.

Global heavyweight in the insurance sphere, Pantaenius, has taken up platinum level sponsorship of this international event, due to the synergies and opportunities for brand exposure to this influential group.

We have a preview of the 'greatest show on Earth', Miami of course, as well as news of changes to the helm at BIA Vic, with the organisation welcoming Steven Gill as its new CEO.

Steve has 20 years experience working with membership based associations, mostly in marine related industries, including six years as the Executive Director of the Western Rock Lobster Council and five years as a board member of the WA Recreational Fishing Peak Body, Recfish West.

Local boat show news abounds, as well as a flurry of new products to kick off 2013.

If you're just back to work, Happy New Year. Let's make it a great one!

Pivot on this
I despise the way ‘pivot' got used as many times as those wretched QR codes... Yes indeed. As much as I would hate to take people back to the COVID era, that's exactly what I've just done. Making that problematic trip back in time look good, is how much I despise the way ‘pivot' got used as many times as those wretched QR codes.

Watching the growing sailing scene in China
A fun weekend at the 2025 Lake Fuxian Regatta I've become fascinated with the growing sailing scene in China. I had so many preconceptions ahead of my first visit to the country in 2024, which were blown out of the water on that trip, and this was reaffirmed at the Lake Fuxian Regatta.

Mini Transat, the Mini Globe Race, and Transat Café L'OR news Sailing headlines of late might be dominated by big monohulls or foiling multihulls (we'll get there), but there are two interesting races afoot involving big oceans and small boats, namely the Mini Transat and the Mini Globe Race.
