Two more races were completed in nine to 10 knot winds on the second day of the Laser Radial Youth Championship in Dziwnów, Poland. It was long day for everyone after a wait ashore for fog to clear only for it to unexpectedly return during the first race. As it thickened the fleets were sent ashore as visibility decreased to 200 metres when as fast it came it lifted as the last fleet sailed in. Late in the afternoon the conditions had stabilised enough for the fleets to return afloat to complete their second race.

The increase in wind strength and the introduction of a discard saw dramatic changes at the front of the girl’s fleet with Martina Cacho ESP and Maite Carlier BEL each winning both their races to jump into the top ten at first and fourth overall. Monnika Mikkola FIN was the most consistent over the two days adding a second and fifth place to her two fourths of the previous day to finish second overall.

In the boy’s fleet the changes were not so dramatic with six of the previous day’s top ten posting results good enough to keep them at the top of the leader board. Nicol Villa from Italy scored the best results of the day, a first and second, to move into first overall tied with Joel Rodriguez ESP and Gianmarco Pianchestainer ITA. The overnight leader, Vladimir Evfirmyevskiy slipped to fourth, one point behind the leading three after scoring a second place and discarding his fourth race score of 16 points.

Day three brought a different weather pattern with a series of electrical storms tracking across Germany into Poland from the south west one of which passed directly over the fleet while they were held ashore after advance warning. Such was the intensity of the storm that the weather never settled and with more intense storms threatened later in the afternoon the racing was abandoned for the day with the fleet still on shore.

Three races are scheduled for the final day of qualifier races after which the fleet will be split into gold and silver and for the boy’s bronze.
